Job Summary

This is a field-based Construction Inspector position within the Department of Assets and Infrastructure (A&I) of Montgomery County Pennsylvania. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that road and bridge construction and maintenance work is completed in a safe and efficient manner, consistent with specifications and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

The Construction Inspector will be responsible for:

  • Performing construction maintenance duties and independent construction inspection duties, including operation of county vehicles and equipment;
  • Completing and overseeing activities related to the maintenance and upkeep of the County's road and bridge inventory, including paving, patching, and erosion control;
  • Operating small tools and equipment, and completing basic carpentry and masonry tasks;
  • Participating in on-call service for emergencies after hours and on weekends;
  • Coordinating project and maintenance needs with field foremen positions and with the Roads and Bridges Administrator;
  • Preparing and submitting daily logs electronically, and monitoring project quality, schedule, and budget;
  • Following and assisting with the formulation of standard operating procedures, including quality control and assurance, and document control;
  • Coordinating activities with County contracted engineers.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, the candidate must have:

  • A high school diploma;
  • Experience with road resurfacing projects and bridge rehabilitation and maintenance programs, with a minimum of 10 years of experience preferred;
  • 30 hour HASP certification or in process of obtaining required;
  • NICET certification preferred;
  • Familiarity with PennDOT design and construction standards;
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety with knowledge of best practices;
  • Excellent communication skills, especially with public and subordinates;
  • Ability to perform work throughout Montgomery County;
  • Valid commercial PA driver's license and ability to provide own transportation to job sites;
  • Computer systems familiarity, minimally MS Office required;
  • Ability to read architectural and engineering design plans and specifications preferred.
Physical Demands

The physical demands of this role include:

  • Ability to walk on uneven terrain;
  • Shoveling, raking, lifting of rocks, dirt, asphalt, and stone in excess of 50 lbs;
  • Flagging (standing) 20% of the day, with potential to exceed 20% depending on project;
  • Ability to work in all types of climate and temperatures;
  • Ability to use backhoe, air compressors, and jack hammer;
  • Ability to climb, bend, squat, stoop, kneel for various amounts of time during the day;
  • Ability to handle all Safety Equipment and train others in use of same.
Work Environment

The work environment for this role is typically moderate noise level.
