The Mission Planning Systems Engineer will play a crucial role in supporting advanced space exploration initiatives. This position involves collaboration on the JETS II contract, focusing on innovative strategies for human spaceflight.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Formulate concepts and outline future human space exploration missions and vehicles.
- Analyze upcoming Lunar mission strategies, considering various constraints across multiple spacecraft including Gateway, Orion, and HLS.
- Engage in requirements development, flow-down processes, assessment, and verification.
- Contribute to the creation of operational concepts and software Verification and Validation (V&V) plans.
- Collaborate with team members to identify potential risks and develop appropriate mitigation strategies.
- Evaluate documentation for significant milestone reviews such as CBR, PDR, CDR, etc.
- Conduct reviews of Hazard Analyses.
- Participate in HLS Project meetings and summarize discussions for technical leads.
- Conduct trade studies and engage in stakeholder review processes.
- Work effectively within a team-oriented environment.
- Report progress, challenges, and support requests to the team lead.
- Maintain professional relationships with NASA clients, other contractors, and commercial partners involved in HLS.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Resident status is required due to the sensitive nature of the information involved.
- A bachelor's degree in engineering with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
- Licensure and certification may be necessary.
- Experience in early-stage program concept development and formulation.
- Proficiency in requirements development, design trade analysis, Concept of Operations development, risk assessment, and system analysis of space hardware.
- Experience in creating operational concepts for both single and multiple vehicle systems.
- Knowledge of technology roadmap development and technology infusion strategies.
- Ability to gather and comprehend stakeholder requirements.
- Experience with interface definitions for vehicle subsystems and across multiple mission elements.
- Capability to create configuration growth plans and define incremental mission capabilities.
- Experience in defining mission sequences for both individual and multiple missions.
- Familiarity with testing and verification processes for spaceflight hardware.
- Understanding of systems engineering principles and associated documentation.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Degree in electrical, mechanical, or aerospace engineering.
- Experience collaborating with various NASA organizations.
- Background in working across different NASA centers.
- Experience in hardware or software development projects.
- Knowledge of space mission analysis, including orbit analysis and spacecraft constraint evaluation.
- Familiarity with human space exploration systems such as Orion, Commercial Crew, ISS, and EMU/xEMU.
- Basic understanding of common practices in space hardware, including mechanical and electrical system design.
- INCOSE Systems Engineering Professional certification.
- Familiarity with system architecture tools like DoDAF and TODAF.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- This position operates on a 9/80 schedule, providing every other Friday off.
- Some travel may be required.

All employees must successfully pass a national agency check, with some positions requiring additional clearance and extensive background verification.

All employees must pass a pre-employment drug screening; certain contracts may require participation in random drug and alcohol testing.
