Position Overview:

The Senior Environmental Chemist at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago plays a pivotal role in overseeing laboratory operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in managing and guiding a chemical laboratory team.
  • Conduct research initiatives related to environmental chemistry.
  • Engage in sophisticated testing and analytical procedures.

Core Duties:

  • Delegate, oversee, and assess the work of laboratory staff.
  • Participate in both chemical and microbiological analyses.
  • Review and validate laboratory analyses and calculations.
  • Establish and assess quality assurance protocols within the laboratory.
  • Diagnose and repair laboratory analytical instruments.
  • Analyze and confirm data; compile necessary documentation.
  • Contribute to the training and development of laboratory personnel.
  • Act in the capacity of section leader during their absence.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • May undertake responsibilities related to hazardous waste management.
  • Execute other tasks as required.

Work Environment:

Exposure to various chemical and biological substances is expected, some of which may be hazardous or toxic.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • In-depth understanding of wastewater treatment and sludge management.
  • Strong grasp of environmental chemistry principles and quality assurance practices.
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis methods and hazardous waste regulations.
  • Basic proficiency in spreadsheet and database software.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must possess a bachelor’s degree in chemistry or chemical engineering, along with four years of relevant professional experience in the field of chemistry.

Substitution Policy:

Advanced studies in chemistry may be considered in lieu of the required experience.

Promotional Criteria:

  • Completion of one year in the role of Environmental Chemist.
  • Achieved civil service status as an Environmental Chemist.
