Role Summary:

Under the supervision of a pathologist, the Pathologist Assistant will independently conduct or assist in the accessioning, dissection, description, autopsy, and histological sampling of a comprehensive array of surgical specimens within an anatomic pathology laboratory environment. Responsibilities also encompass submitting tissue samples for microscopic analysis, documenting macroscopic anatomical observations, examining surgical specimens, performing frozen sections, mentoring pathology residents, and executing additional assigned tasks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts and/or assists pathologists in the accessioning, dissection, evisceration, description, autopsy, and histological sampling of various anatomical specimens.
  • Oversees and instructs entry-level resident physicians in pathology methodologies and procedures, adhering to established protocols and guidance from medical professionals.
  • Executes frozen sections and other intra-operative consultations, following defined protocols and procedural guidelines.
  • Engages in the accessioning and labeling of specimens, managing specimen storage and disposal, and maintaining reagents and laboratory equipment.
  • May be responsible for completing postmortem examination reports.
  • May review, interpret, and present pathological findings.
  • Ensures equipment sterilization and regulatory compliance.
  • Performs other job-related responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of pathology procedures, protocols, and techniques.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Dependability, flexibility, and adaptability are essential.
  • Familiarity with accreditation and certification standards and requirements.
  • Commitment to maintaining quality, safety, and infection control standards.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Biology, an accredited Pathologist Assistant program, or a related field is required.
  • Current certification from the American Association of Pathologists' Assistants or the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is highly preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in a laboratory setting is required.
