Job SummaryWe are seeking a Behavior Education Assistant to provide teaching assistance under the direction of a licensed teacher in classrooms or as otherwise needed. The successful candidate will serve as a member of the support team for an assigned school, providing assistance to students, staff, and families using best practices for assisting individuals and groups of students.
Responsibilities- Assist teachers in classroom or other educational settings
- Oversee, monitor, or conduct classes during the temporary absence of teachers
- Assist teachers in setting up and conducting various class activities and projects
- Work with and assist students during class activities and projects
- Prepare instructional materials for classroom use
- Copy materials for use by teachers
- Set up and assist with classroom technology
- Assist in administering and grading tests
- Assist in evaluating student performance and skill levels
- Create bulletin boards, displays, or wall decorations
- Assist with cleanup activities
- Implement strong behavior programs, plans, and strategies that are appropriate for young learners
- Support the tiered response system of MTSS and connect Social Emotional Learning (SEL) support and SPED resources, 504 where needed
- Provide tutoring or one-on-one assistance to students in basic educational skills
- Assist students with word study, spelling, sentence writing, reading, math, science, physical education, or other areas
- Utilize instructional programs
- Assist with development of lesson plans
- Maintain order in classroom, and in conjunction with administrative staff, administer discipline when necessary to achieve proper behavior
- Manage student conduct and disciplinary issues in accordance with district, state, and federal guidelines, policies, and procedures
- Monitor students in cafeteria, auditorium, halls, bus zones, or other common areas
- Organize groups of students upon arrival/departure
- Seat students in appropriate areas
- Assist in cleaning tables or spills
- Chaperone students on field trips occurring during the regular school day only
- Monitor behavior/activities of students and initiate disciplinary action per prescribed policies under the teacher's direction
- Follow established procedures for ensuring students are safe
- Perform clerical tasks in support of teaching activities, office operations, and/or other school functions
- Communicate with supervisor, employees, other departments, school officials, teachers, students, parents, vendors, the public, and other individuals as needed
- Attend staff meetings, parent meetings, IEP-Team meetings, or other meetings as required
- Follow established procedures for ensuring assigned areas are safe
- Work collaboratively with supervisor, administrators, employees, students, and other stakeholders
- Attend work regularly and arrive to work in a timely fashion
- Maintain confidentiality
- Adhere to the Teacher Code of Ethics as defined by Tennessee Law
- Provide assistance to other employees or departments as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned
- High school diploma or GED required
- Basic technology skills required
- General office/clerical experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job
- Must possess one of the following before reporting to work: semester hours or 72 quarter hours; (2) An Associate's degree or higher; (3) passing score on PRAXIS for Parapro Exam
- One year of experience working with children preferred
- Fluency in Spanish required for educational assistant in ESOL program
- Ability to learn and implement a variety of teaching strategies
- Demonstrate proficient verbal and written communication skills
Salary is based on a combination of relevant education and experience.
