Position Overview:
The Hospital Inpatient Coding Specialist, operating under the guidance of the Coding and Data Quality Manager, is responsible for the precise coding of inpatient hospital accounts. This role is essential for ensuring appropriate reimbursement, supporting research initiatives, maintaining statistical accuracy, and adhering to both federal and state regulations through established ICD-10-CM/PCS coding systems.
Key Responsibilities:
The following duties outline the primary functions of this position. They are not exhaustive but provide a clear understanding of the expected responsibilities:
1. Conducts thorough analysis of inpatient cases, accurately identifying and assigning ICD-10 diagnostic and PCS procedural codes to facilitate reimbursement, research, and compliance with regulatory standards.
2. Employs critical thinking skills to assess and resolve documentation challenges, collaborating with medical staff and clinical documentation specialists as necessary.
3. Monitors daily workload to ensure timely billing processes, coding, and abstracting records within the designated timeframes for each patient category.
4. Maintains a high standard of accuracy in code assignment to mitigate claim denials, billing discrepancies, and potential legal ramifications.
5. Reviews medical records, including patient histories, examination results, diagnoses, and treatment plans, to extract relevant information for accurate code assignment.
6. Engages with various hospital departments regarding billing and registration matters, promptly referring issues to management with detailed information.
7. Adheres to AHIMA ethical coding standards and compliance guidelines, including strict observance of HIPAA privacy regulations.
8. Utilizes coding references, software tools, and electronic health records (EHR) to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of code assignment.
9. Participates in ongoing education, training, and certification programs to improve coding skills and maintain professional credentials.
10. Demonstrates commitment to the Medical System's mission, vision, and values, and performs additional duties or projects as assigned by management.

CCS, Coding, Inpatient, ICD-10, Epic, RHIT, RHIA
Additional Qualifications:
Experience: A minimum of three years in outpatient coding with a CCS certification (or obtain within one year) is required, along with at least one year of inpatient ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS coding experience in a hospital environment.
Certifications: Certification as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) is mandatory. Preferred certifications include Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) and Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Strong analytical and organizational capabilities; familiarity with filing systems; ability to prioritize tasks; meet deadlines and perform effectively under pressure; excellent customer service skills; understanding of general office procedures; problem-solving skills; ability to work independently; basic medical terminology knowledge; computer proficiency; typing skills.
Education: A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent is required. Formal training in ICD-10-CM and CPT is necessary, with an associate or bachelor's degree preferred.
