Job Overview:

General Summary

Under the guidance of supervisory personnel, operates or assists in the management of designated mechanical apparatus at a sewage treatment facility, sludge disposal site, or pumping station, while monitoring various equipment components for optimal performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operates or aids in the management of assigned mechanical apparatus at a water reclamation facility, pumping station, or sludge disposal site, ensuring all equipment is functioning properly.
  • Handles a range of sophisticated high-pressure, high-temperature, and high-speed processing machinery, including pumps, blowers, turbines/generators, boilers, centrifuges, digesters, and auxiliary systems, as well as environmental control equipment.
  • Regularly inspects the operational state of assigned machinery throughout the facility for any irregularities, such as wear, excessive vibration, or corrosion, and implements immediate corrective actions to uphold efficient operations.
  • Records readings from meters, gauges, and instruments. Updates meter charts, maintains precise operational logs and records, and prepares reports.
  • Conducts all tasks in a safe manner, adhering to established safety protocols and guidelines.

Additional Responsibilities

  • May oversee personnel within a sewage treatment facility or pumping station, consulting with supervisors regarding personnel issues or unusual equipment conditions.
  • Engages in special projects related to operational processes.
  • Investigates various causes of equipment malfunctions.
  • Troubleshoots equipment outages when time permits.
  • Performs other assigned duties as necessary.

Working Conditions

May involve exposure to various mechanical equipment and high noise levels and/or unpleasant odors. Work may be conducted in diverse weather conditions throughout the facility and collection system.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Basic understanding of the operation and maintenance of pumps, motors, and related electrical and mechanical systems, as well as high-pressure steam boilers.
  • Awareness of occupational hazards and safety measures relevant to the work.
  • Capability to diagnose electrical and mechanical issues with equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret a wide range of measuring and testing instruments associated with plant operations.
  • Proficiency in maintaining records and generating reports.

Mandatory Qualifications

Must hold a City of Chicago Stationary Engineer's License.

Minimum Educational and Experience Requirements

Completion of a standard senior high school education or equivalent, along with three years of relevant operational experience.

Substitution Policy

Additional experience may be considered in lieu of the required education on a year-for-year basis. Successful completion of a recognized training program in the operation of stationary equipment may substitute for the required experience on a month-for-month basis, up to a maximum of one year.

Promotional Criteria

  • One year of service with the District as a Fireman Oiler.
  • Civil service status as a Fireman Oiler.
