Job Summary

We are seeking a Respiratory Therapy Student Extern to join our team at Inova Fairfax Hospital. As a Respiratory Therapy Student Extern, you will work under the direct supervision of a Respiratory Therapist to perform a variety of tasks and procedures in accordance with completed competencies and unit needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the healthcare team in implementing the plan of care and achieving desired patient and unit outcomes through effective communication and collaboration.
  • Provide assistance in maintaining supplies and equipment available to ensure efficient operations.
  • Collect and clean equipment, perform pre-use checks on ventilators, and participate in Quality Improvement Processes.
  • Provide designated direct and indirect patient care activities, utilizing resources efficiently and effectively.
  • Monitor, promote, and maintain an environment that facilitates safe and effective patient care.
  • Responsible for measurement of peak flow, simple spirometry, and pulse oximetry.
  • Assist in delivering selected respiratory modalities, therapies, and procedures to patients under the guidance of experienced respiratory therapists.
  • Assume responsibility and take initiative to expand knowledge and skills related to respiratory therapy.
  • Manage the storage and distribution of oxygen to ensure a continuous and safe supply to patients.
Requirements
  • Must be actively enrolled and in good standing in an accredited Respiratory Therapy Program.
  • Student must be in their 2nd year of a two-year Respiratory Therapy Program or equivalent at a four-year Respiratory Therapy Program.
  • Successful completion of Inova Extern 1 competency checklist.
  • BLS certification from AHA upon start.
