Position Overview
Tonal is seeking a dedicated backend developer to collaborate across product, engineering, and design teams, playing a pivotal role in constructing the platform that supports the world's most advanced personal training system.

In this role, you will tackle complex challenges in software development for a unique consumer fitness product, thriving in a dynamic and agile setting while delivering high-quality software solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the development of significant software initiatives for our backend services, which are essential for personalized workout suggestions, dynamic media creation, and comprehensive analytics based on extensive fitness data.
  • Work in close partnership with our integrated software, hardware, and content teams to continually enhance our consumer-focused fitness offerings.
  • Collaborate with the product team to clarify specifications and design new features.
  • Implement, test, deploy, and monitor software for our cloud-based backend microservices.
  • Write and review clean, secure, and testable code with an emphasis on maintainability, scalability, and performance.
  • Develop and maintain cloud-based big data pipelines.
  • Utilize analytics to gain insights into product usage and drive data-informed decisions.
  • Mentor and share your extensive knowledge with junior engineers.
Qualifications
We are looking for a self-motivated backend engineer with a proven track record of managing software projects from inception to completion, who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • 5+ years of experience in software development.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems independently with minimal oversight.
  • Extensive experience with distributed systems, microservices architecture, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP), and RESTful APIs.
  • Proficiency in server-side software development using Golang or other languages (e.g., Rust, C++, C#, Java, Python).
  • Strong understanding of database design and modeling (e.g., PostgreSQL).
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team.
  • Experience with data-intensive applications, big data pipelines, and analytics tools such as Snowflake, DataBricks, Amplitude, and Looker.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes, Helm, Docker, and ArgoCD.
  • Experience with Postgres, Redis, Kafka, and Airflow.
  • Knowledge of Android development, Flutter, and Kotlin.
  • Experience with Swift/SwiftUI.
  • Background in working with remote teams.
  • Experience integrating with payment systems.
  • Interest in the fitness industry.

$163K - $225K
