Position Overview

Chota Community Health Services is seeking a dedicated individual to join our team as a Phlebotomist Lab Assistant. This role is essential in providing quality care to our patients through effective specimen collection and processing.

Key Responsibilities

● Collaborate within a Patient Centered Medical Home Care Team to enhance patient care.

● Facilitate patient interactions by identifying optimal methods for blood and specimen collection, ensuring accurate preparation for laboratory analysis.

● Execute venipuncture procedures, which include:

  • Accurately identifying patients using two identifiers.
  • Verifying completeness of lab orders and acquiring any necessary information from healthcare providers.
  • Maintaining specimen integrity through aseptic techniques and adherence to departmental protocols.
  • Documenting collected specimens with initials, dates, and times, while maintaining daily collection tallies.
  • Providing reassurance to patients experiencing anxiety regarding sampling procedures and applying appropriate dressings post-collection.
  • Performing venipuncture in patient rooms as required.

● Process additional tests as requested by healthcare providers.

● Conduct PT/INR testing, input results into the system, and communicate any abnormal findings to the provider.

● Address unusual test orders by consulting with laboratory technicians or contacting providers for clarification, and escalate unresolved orders to supervisors.

● Print and send results to external providers upon request.

● Conduct CLIA waived testing as necessary.

● Assist with specimen processing for AEL and Quest Diagnostics.

● Monitor specimen tracking to ensure receipt from reference laboratories.

● Maintain cleanliness and organization in the phlebotomy area, including the removal of expired items.

● Manage inventory for AEL/Quest Diagnostics supplies.

● Support non-technical laboratory functions as needed.

● Uphold lab hygiene standards post-patient visits, including assigned cleaning tasks and proper disposal of infectious waste in accordance with safety protocols.

● Adhere to all regulatory standards and clinic policies while performing job duties.

● Fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned.

● Engage in quality improvement initiatives.

● Maintain regular and predictable attendance.

● Foster a cooperative work environment.

● Participate in monthly staff meetings and quarterly lab meetings as scheduled.
