Phlebotomist Lab Assistant

● Participate in Patient Centered Medical Home Care Team collaboration.
● Serves patients by identifying the best method for retrieving blood samples and other specimens, preparing specimens for laboratory testing, and performing screening procedures.
● Venipuncture of patients which includes:
o Properly identify patients using two patient identifiers
o Ensure lab orders are complete and obtain any missing order information from providers as needed
o Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures, and observing isolation procedures
o Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection and maintaining daily tallies of collections performed
o Reassures patients who are nervous about sampling procedures and applies dressings to wounds created by blood draws
o Performs venipuncture in patient rooms when needed
● Process Add-On Tests when ordered by provider.
● Performs PT/INR testing, enters results in the computer, and notifies the provider of results falling outside normal ranges.
● Resolves unusual test orders by consulting with the laboratory technician or contacting the provider, referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification, and notifying supervisor of unresolved orders.
● Print and fax results to outside providers when ordered/requested.
● Perform CLIA waived testing when needed.
● Assist with specimen processing for AEL and Quest Diagnostics.
● Track specimens to ensure all have been received from the reference labs.
● Keep the phlebotomy area clean, stocked, organized and removal of expired items.
● Conduct and maintain inventory for AEL/Quest Diagnostics supplies.
● Help with any and all non-technical aspects of the Lab.
● Responsible for lab hygiene after patient visit, cleaning tasks as assigned, and properly disposing of infectious waste in an appropriate and timely manner following the Exposure Control Plan Procedure and Medical Waste Disposal Guide.
● Practices in compliance with all regulatory standards and adheres to all clinic policy and procedures in the performance of duties.
● Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
● Participates in quality improvement activities.
● Regular and predictable attendance.
● Ability to cooperate and work well with others.
● Attends and participates in monthly staff meetings and quarterly lab meetings when held.
