Job Overview

The Middle School Guidance Counselor plays a crucial role in establishing and overseeing a comprehensive counseling program tailored to address the academic, social, and career development needs of students.

Key Responsibilities

Program Development and Oversight:

  • Utilizes data to inform the creation and assessment of the counseling program, ensuring alignment with educational objectives.
  • Facilitates the transition of student records and data across academic years, ensuring accurate scheduling and registration processes.
  • Collaborates with school leadership to design and manage a holistic counseling program.
  • Effectively communicates the goals of the counseling program to stakeholders, including students, families, and community partners.
  • Allocates approximately 80% of time to direct student services, focusing on preventive and responsive interventions.

Preventive and Responsive Services:

  • Develops, implements, and evaluates the guidance curriculum.
  • Conducts individual and group counseling sessions to address students' academic, social, and personal challenges.
  • Engages with families and educators to assess student needs and provide tailored educational recommendations.
  • Organizes and delivers classroom guidance sessions aimed at enhancing academic achievement, career development, and personal growth.
  • Identifies student needs and facilitates referrals to appropriate resources and support services.

Community and Parental Engagement:

  • Leads and supports school staff in the execution of advisory programs.
  • Employs responsive counseling techniques to foster relationships with educators, students, families, and community stakeholders, promoting cultural appreciation.
  • Assists families in navigating available services for their children through effective referral processes.
  • Provides insights to teachers regarding student data to enhance understanding and support.
  • Conducts training sessions on relevant topics to bolster the school counseling program and student success.

Accountability:

  • Prepares and submits various reports to meet program requirements.
  • Analyzes data, including academic performance and attendance, to identify students needing support.
  • Interprets assessment results to develop individualized academic plans for students.
Qualifications

Ideal candidates will possess:

  • A Bachelor's degree in counseling (Master's preferred) and at least one year of relevant counseling experience.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to develop and implement initiatives with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with experience presenting data to various audiences.
  • Familiarity with family resources available in the community is highly desirable.
