Job Summary

The Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA) plays a vital role in providing occupational therapy services to students with diverse needs and disabilities. Under the direction of an Occupational Therapist, the COTA will work collaboratively with the educational team to develop and implement individualized plans to promote students' functional independence and access to their educational environment.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Deliver occupational therapy services to students with varying needs and disabilities, as outlined in their Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) or 504 Plan.
  2. Assist students in developing skills to access their educational environment, promoting functional independence.
  3. Operate occupational therapy equipment safely and effectively.
  4. Schedule and deliver occupational therapy services for students, as identified in special education documentation.
  5. Collaborate with the educational team, including general education teachers, special education teachers, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical education teachers, nurses, administrators, paraeducators, and bus drivers.
  6. Communicate effectively with district staff, school staff, students, families, community members, and stakeholders.
  7. Support the mission, vision, and values of Grand Forks Public Schools.
  8. Adhere to Grand Forks Public School and Grand Forks Public School Special Education Unit policies and procedures.
Work Environment and Physical Demands

The COTA will work in a school setting, frequently required to sit, occasionally walk and stand. The ability to hear and see effectively is necessary for communication and interaction with students, staff, and stakeholders. The employee may encounter situations where students are physically aggressive and/or verbally abusive, requiring physical interaction using de-escalation and restraint training strategies. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, and the employee may be exposed to infection at a greater risk than the average person.

Terms of Employment

The COTA position is a 9-month academic school year position, with 8 hours/day (approximately) Monday through Friday, when school is in session. Annual written evaluations will be completed by the Executive Director of Special Education or Assistant Director of Special Education.
