Shipfitter Journeyman

We are seeking a highly skilled Shipfitter Journeyman to join our team at Nationwide Skilled Trades, Inc. As a key member of our ship repair team, you will be responsible for assembling, cutting, and grinding metal structural parts to ensure the safe and efficient operation of our clients' vessels.
Key Responsibilities- Lay out work from blueprints and specifications to ensure accurate and efficient fabrication.
- Cut, burn, grind, and fit metal structural parts to meet precise tolerances and quality standards.
- Tack and weld foundation and structural members to ensure a strong and durable structure.
- Operate high-reaching equipment, including condors, sky climbers, and scissors lifts, to access and work on elevated areas of the ship.
- Set up tools and equipment at the job site and clean up and remove scrap to maintain a safe and organized workspace.
- Operate overhead cranes and use rigging equipment to move and position heavy metal components.
- Minimum 5 years of on-the-job experience in ship repair and fabrication.
- Demonstrated knowledge of blueprint reading, ship terminology, and different metals required for ship construction and repair.
- Good burning, welding, and craftsmanship skills, with the ability to work accurately and efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
- Mechanical ability and knowledge of welding processes, including T-1 welding certification for FCAW (flux core) and SMAW (stick) welding.
- Ability to pass a hands-on assessment test conducted by NASSCO and to work at heights, in confined spaces, and on any assigned shift.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to comprehend written and verbal instructions and to work effectively with colleagues and supervisors.
- A minimum of 3/4 years of Shipfitter experience.
- OSHA 10-Hour Maritime Certificate.
- Comprehensive understanding of ship repair terminology and ship compartment location nomenclature.
- Possess a working knowledge of and be able to take measurements using the Metric and Imperial measurement systems.
- Be able to comprehend instructions, drawings, and general correspondence in English.
- Ability to effectively confer job-related information to the structural supervisor and small groups.
- Ability to read and interpret structural drawings (including weld symbols), sketches, specifications, and NavSea standard items and Navy damage control diagrams.
The successful candidate will be required to lift 50+ pounds, bend, stretch, and stand for extended periods of time, climb stairs, ladders, reach, twist, work at elevated heights, and in small spaces. They must also be able to successfully complete welding certification exams and possess or be eligible to obtain a DBIDS (Defense Biometric Identification) card.
