Job Title: Substation Engineer

About the Role:

We are seeking a highly skilled Substation Engineer to join our team at Renewyx. As a key member of our engineering team, you will be responsible for designing and analyzing electrical systems for substation interconnect facilities, solar, and BESS energy facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and analyze electrical systems for substation interconnect facilities, solar, and BESS energy facilities.
  • Review and revise commercial and utility plan sets for photovoltaic (PV) and Battery Storage (BESS) system installations and site survey sketches.
  • Collaborate with Engineers of Record (EORs), customers, engineering and design team members, and contractors to coordinate overall design packages and transition designs to the field.
  • Conduct design development and optimization, field construction, and installation methods.
  • Develop detailed design concepts and provide long-term support for optimization and constructability.
  • Use electrical engineering calculation tools for sizing equipment and materials based on project needs.
  • Perform independent engineering report writing and evaluation.
  • Review and approve equipment vendor drawings, conduct plant and substation design reviews, and perform project detailed design and QA/QC reviews for accuracy and completeness.
  • Assist with commercial agreement reviews, including Power Purchase Agreements (PPA), Interconnection Agreements, Service Contracts, and Facility Studies.
  • Collaborate with Business Development, Estimating, and Engineering teams to create preliminary site layouts, single-line drawings, and BOMs for project proposals.
  • Provide technical support for proposals, estimating, procurement, and construction.
  • Perform advanced-level engineering tasks, calculations, data analysis, and studies to develop detailed scopes of work for projects.
  • Assess electrical technologies for optimal system design, including material selection, augmentation, and asset mix.
  • Estimate plant losses and calculation of assessment uncertainties.
  • Conduct site visits to ensure construction aligns with engineering designs.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited institution preferred.
  • 8-10 years of related work experience, including a combination of trade and relevant work experience.
  • Competency in electrical system sizing and experience with utility/commercial-scale renewable EPC projects.
  • Utility-scale substation design experience is highly preferred.
  • Experience with power quality and facility studies is a plus.
  • Experience in utility-scale solar/PV projects is highly preferred.
  • Ability to work both in the office and in the field, with the option for remote work.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily works in a climate-controlled environment, with fieldwork occurring in varying weather conditions.
  • Exposure to large industrial equipment with high noise levels in the field.
  • Occasional exposure to hazardous chemicals.
