Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and development in reservoir engineering and data science with a focus on application to carbon capture, utilization, and storage.
  • Develop and implement various machine learning models and neural networks to analyze large geophysical, petrophysical, geologic, reservoir, and other subsurface data sets.
  • Collaborate with engineers, data scientists, and geologists to contribute to codes and algorithm development in Python.
  • Fundraise from state, federal, and industry sources to support fundamental and applied research in relevant topics.
  • Communicate research results through publications, presentations, and conferences.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in petroleum engineering, computer sciences, electrical engineering, civil and environmental engineering, geophysics, or a related field.
  • Expertise in developing various machine learning models and neural networks.
  • Ability to implement advanced data and analytics methodologies to geoscience.
  • Proven capacity for innovative, creative scientific analysis.
  • Proven publication skills and verbal communication skills with a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively in a group.
  • Ability to work effectively with multiple disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the application of advanced data and analytics and statistical methodologies to large geophysical, petrophysical, geologic, reservoir, and other subsurface data sets.
  • Knowledge of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).
  • Broad skills base with deep expertise in certain areas, such as geomechanics, stratigraphy, 3D seismic interpretation, log analysis, and/or basin modeling.
  • Familiarity with fluid flow modeling (CCUS modeling experience is a plus).

Working Conditions

  • May work in a standard office environment.
  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation.
  • Occasional weekend, overtime, and evening work to meet deadlines.
  • Occasional travel intrastate, interstate, international.
  • Occasional fieldwork as necessary.

Retirement Plan Eligibility

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
