We are seeking an experienced Chief Animal Welfare Officer, Senior Team Lead to join our team at the Cruelty Recovery Center in Columbus, OH. This is a critical role that will oversee the behavior health and welfare of animals housed at the CRC, ensuring that they receive the highest level of care and support.

About the Role

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing leadership and guidance to a team of 14 behavior experts, including 3 Senior Managers of Animal Behavior and 11 Behavior Specialists. They will oversee the development and implementation of behavior modification plans, provide hands-on coaching to staff, and ensure consistent use of organization-wide behavior guidelines and protocols.

The ideal candidate will have a comprehensive understanding of shelter animal behavior, excellent people management and team leadership skills, and superior interpersonal skills. They will be able to inspire a team, lead through challenges, and keep a team focused on the big picture and mission beyond their daily work.

Responsibilities
  • Leadership of Behavior Operations (35%): Oversee the behavioral health and welfare of animals housed at the CRC, emergency temporary shelters, and in foster care.
  • Team Leadership (30%): Serve as part of a unified leadership team, modeling teamwork, an integrated care philosophy, and mutual respect.
  • People Management (30%): Supervise three direct reports, conduct regular one-on-one check-ins, career counseling sessions, feedback sessions, and periodic skip-level meetings.
Requirements

To be considered for this role, you must have:

  • Advanced animal behavior and animal welfare knowledge, including a strong foundation in learning theory and ethology.
  • Comprehensive understanding of shelter animal behavior and its integration into all aspects of shelter operations.
  • Highly effective people- and team-management abilities.
  • Exceptional leadership skills, considering multiple variables and stakeholders when making decisions.
Benefits

This is a full-time position with a competitive salary range of $124,000 - $134,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience. The ASPCA offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, retirement plan, and paid time off.

Location

This position is located at the Cruelty Recovery Center in Columbus, OH. The successful candidate will be required to relocate to Columbus within 12 months of hire. Relocation assistance is available.
