Job Summary

The State of Alaska is seeking a skilled Psychiatric Nurse to join our team at the Alaska Psychiatric Institute. As a Psychiatric Nurse, you will provide high-quality patient care, work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team, and contribute to the development of individualized treatment plans.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide skilled nursing care to patients, including individualized patient assessment and care.
  • Participate in therapeutic activities as a facilitator or co-facilitator.
  • Administer medications to patients and provide education on expected outcomes, possible side effects, and food/drug interactions.
  • Transcribe all orders and record information in each patient's Medication Administration Record (MAR) and chart regarding patient behavior and responses to medication treatment.
  • Complete nursing assessments on newly admitted patients, patients on close observation special status, or patients who may require emergency seclusion or restraint.
  • Determine and prioritize individual nursing needs.
  • Provide direction to Office Assistant Is and Psychiatric Nurse Assistants I/II/III, including work assignments and monitoring those assignments for completion and accuracy.
Requirements
  • Eligibility for licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alaska.
  • Experience working with mentally ill or developmentally disabled individuals is preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member with good judgment.
  • Ability to apply discretion in handling confidential information and situations, while exercising a high degree of tact, discretion, and sound judgment in the performance of the work.
  • Good organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and productively manage time to ensure compliance with numerous deadlines while working effectively under pressure with continual interruption, reorganizing priorities in a dynamic, frequently changing work environment.
  • Above-average communication skills with the ability to convey information courteously, accurately, and effectively.
