Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join our team at the City of Pensacola, FL. As a Heavy Equipment Mechanic, you will be responsible for performing skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of heavy duty trucks and specialized heavy equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Diagnose and execute repairs needed on heavy duty trucks and specialized heavy equipment
  • Report time and supplies used on each vehicle serviced or repaired
  • Order parts as needed
  • Communicate with supervisory staff, drivers, and equipment operators to determine services needed and gather information necessary to diagnose problems
  • Repair and service automobiles, trucks, tractors, and various other powered equipment
  • Drive service trucks and make road service calls to facilitate repairs on site
  • Diagnose and repair engines, drive trains, electrical, steering, and suspensions, braking systems, and components
  • Perform preventative maintenance service and inspections on a variety of city-owned vehicles and equipment
  • Diagnose and repair defective electrical wiring and electronic systems
  • Operate all types of shop equipment, including hydraulic jacks, air and electric powered tools, bench grinders, and brake lathes
  • May perform minor fabrication and welding repair work using electric arc welding and MIG welding equipment, acetylene torches, drill press, side grinders, and related equipment
Requirements
  • Sufficient education to read and understand technical material and prepare simple written reports and enter data electronically into the City's fleet management system
  • Three (3) years of experience as a medium duty/heavy duty truck or heavy equipment mechanic, or a combination of education, training, and/or work experience equal to or higher than the requirements listed
  • Ability to provide a basic minimum set of mechanics tools as required by Fleet Management
  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems operation, including diagnostic procedures for checking fluid flow rates, pressure settings, and associated adjustments
  • Knowledge of air brake operating systems, diagnostic procedures, and performance standards
  • Ability to perform a full brake overhaul in compliance with FMCSR requirements
  • Current 609 HVAC Certification and Airbrake Certification, or ability to acquire within one year of employment
Working Conditions

The employee will be frequently exposed to outside weather conditions and occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, and has a risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment may be loud.
