Job Summary

We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our Water Discipline team at Colliers Engineering & Design. The successful candidate will have a strong background in mechanical engineering, with a focus on rotating equipment and auxiliary mechanical systems.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 10+ years of experience in mechanical engineering, with a proven track record of managing projects and leading design efforts. They will also have excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to mentor junior staff and work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.

The role will involve managing projects for the repair and/or upgrade or replacement of hydroelectric turbines, generators, and auxiliary systems. The successful candidate will also be responsible for leading or assisting in the design effort for upgrade/replacement of hydroelectric auxiliary mechanical systems, as well as gate operating equipment on or near the water.

Responsibilities
  • Manage projects for the repair and/or upgrade or replacement of hydroelectric turbines, generators, and auxiliary systems.
  • Lead or assist in the design effort for upgrade/replacement of hydroelectric auxiliary mechanical systems.
  • Lead or assist in the design effort for gate operating equipment on or near the water.
  • Direct the development of bid documents (plans, Specs and Cost estimates).
  • Develop or provide input on design effort for proposals.
  • Mentor junior staff.
  • Review/edit/write technical reports.
  • Review/edit/write technical specifications.
  • Develop design criteria for projects.
  • Oversee teams of drafters to prepare design drawings.
  • Perform QA/QC by verifying design methodology, calculations, outcomes, etc.
  • Perform vendor shop inspections and audits.
  • Lead field inspections and surveys in support of repair, design, and construction efforts.
  • Develop design alternatives.
  • Assist project managers and leaders as needed in the creation of proposals, client information, and designs.
Qualifications
  • Bachelors' Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Professional engineer licensure preferred (or desire to become licensed).
  • Minimum 10+ years of experience in mechanical engineering, with emphasis on rotating equipment and auxiliary mechanical systems preferred.
  • Knowledge of rotating equipment (pumps, turbines, generators).
  • Knowledge in the design of auxiliary mechanical systems (cooling water, lube oil, compressed air, HVAC).
  • Knowledge of large gates, cranes, and valves will be a plus.
  • Knowledge of mechanical engineering principals and how to apply them to design of mechanical systems and equipment.
  • A desire to work on a variety of project types.
  • A desire to work in a collaborative team environment to learn from and teach others.
  • A desire to work hands-on such as field and manufacturing shop inspections.
  • CAD skills are a plus.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Work on US Army Corps of Engineers projects or familiarity with Corps' design guidelines is a plus.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand English for purposes of comprehending written job-related communications and verbal instructions and interactions.
