The Outpatient Speech Language Pathologist plays a crucial role in providing speech therapy services as prescribed by a physician, adhering to established speech therapy practices. This position entails evaluating, planning, and executing speech therapy interventions for the outpatient demographic.

Qualifications:
Minimum Education
A Master's Degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited institution recognized by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (Required)

Required Licenses and Certifications
Speech-Language Pathologist License in the District of Columbia (Required Upon Hire)

Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification (Required Upon Hire)

Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in Speech-Language Pathology from the American Speech-Language Hearing Association or in the process of certification through a current clinical fellowship (Required)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct and document comprehensive evaluations, including patient and family interviews, observations, objective assessments, and interpretation of findings within the timelines set by departmental policies.
  • Communicate evaluation outcomes with patients, caregivers, and relevant healthcare team members, addressing any inquiries appropriately.
  • Refer patients to suitable practitioners when diagnoses fall outside the scope of expertise.
  • Establish measurable and realistic short- and long-term goals based on the patient's medical condition, expected therapeutic outcomes, discharge plans, and input from patients and families.
  • Utilize established outcome measurement tools in accordance with guidelines.
  • Deliver speech therapy services independently and effectively, adhering to professional standards and regulations, including those set by the Department of Health, The Joint Commission, and the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA), with a focus on patient safety and functional outcomes.
  • Regularly re-evaluate and adjust treatment plans and goals based on the patient's medical status and response to therapy.
  • Engage patients, families, and caregivers in the development of goals and care plans, including discharge planning.
  • Assess and identify discharge planning needs, considering the patient's medical, psychological, behavioral, and socioeconomic factors.
  • Organize and lead community reintegration activities when appropriate.
  • Adhere to established documentation protocols regarding evaluations, treatment notes, and discharge summaries.
  • Encourage and instruct patients and families in therapeutic activities.
  • Maintain productivity levels as determined by the Program Manager.
  • Provide training and support for departmental staff as needed.
  • Supervise clinical fellows and students as assigned.
  • Contribute to the development and revision of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Assist with administrative responsibilities as required.
  • Recommend new equipment and supplies as necessary.
  • Ensure the maintenance of equipment and supplies in an orderly condition.
  • Familiarize oneself with all hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Complete required orientation and training, ensuring all competencies are up to date.
  • Maintain necessary skills, licensure, and credentials for the role.
  • Foster effective inter-departmental relationships and communication.
  • Support the monitoring and evaluation of care quality through performance improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations governing professional practice.
