Position Summary

The Aquatic Programs Supervisor plays a crucial role in supporting the Aquatics Director to ensure the safety and excellence of our aquatic offerings. This position involves maintaining appropriate staffing levels and instructor-to-participant ratios. Additional duties include aiding in staff training and managing administrative tasks.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Current certifications in YMCA Lifeguarding, American Safety & Health Institute, American Red Cross, or American Heart Association BLS for the Professional Rescuer, along with Standard/Community First Aid and Emergency Oxygen Administration (Certified American Red Cross Lifeguards must obtain YMCA Lifeguarding Certification within 90 days of employment).
  • Ability to maintain necessary certifications; must demonstrate lifeguard skills per YMCA standards.
  • Preferred 2-3 years of lifeguarding experience.
  • Work schedule includes late afternoons/evenings from Tuesday to Friday and Saturday mornings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and coordinate aquatic programs effectively.
  • Provide staff with weekly enrollment rosters and participant verification.
  • Complete administrative tasks as directed by the Aquatics Director.
  • Assist in developing shift schedules and monitor timesheets as instructed.
  • While on duty as a lifeguard, maintain vigilant surveillance of the pool and aquatic areas.
  • Review emergency procedures and respond promptly to incidents in line with YMCA policies, completing necessary reports.
  • Enforce safety standards for aquatic activities and ensure compliance with safety rules and guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate records as required by the YMCA and state health regulations.
  • Conduct equipment checks and ensure availability of necessary resources.
  • Actively seek opportunities to enhance safety standards.
  • Foster positive relationships with members, participants, and staff.
  • Continuously monitor the aquatic environment for hazards and report unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Utilize problem-solving skills to make swift decisions and provide effective supervision.
  • Successfully complete periodic aquatic safety assessments.
  • Meet the physical demands outlined below:
    • Tread water for 2 minutes (legs only).
    • Swim 250 yards using front crawl.
    • Swim 50 yards each of front crawl with head up, breaststroke, and elementary backstroke kick.
    • Perform a feet-first surface dive in 8 to 10 feet of water and swim underwater for 15 feet.
    • Sprint approximately 60 feet, perform an arm-over-arm surface dive, retrieve an object from the pool bottom, and tread water for at least one minute.
    • Swim the remaining distance to the pool's end and exit safely.
    • Perform CPR on an adult manikin for 2 minutes while following instructor directions.
    • Remain alert while sitting for extended periods in an elevated chair, monitoring the entire area for safety.
    • Effectively hear and distinguish distress signals amidst background noise.
    • Continuously scan the pool area with clear vision.
    • Perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for water rescues and communicate effectively during emergencies.
    • Act decisively in emergencies, even when uncertain about the situation.
