POSITION SUMMARY:


The Chief Medical Officer is entrusted with the comprehensive oversight of medical guidance for the care and treatment provided by the hospice care team, collaborating closely with the attending physician of the patient.

This role is pivotal in offering medical direction and support to the hospice program, its staff, and volunteers, ensuring the delivery of high-quality care to patients and their families.

The Chief Medical Officer will engage in initiatives aimed at increasing patient census, fostering relationships with referring physicians, and enhancing the quality of care and the overall reputation of Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Kentucky.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

MEDICAL OVERSIGHT:
Approves the admission and discharge processes for all hospice patients.
Ensures thorough evaluation and certification of terminal prognosis and oversees recertifications.
Maintains privileges at affiliated healthcare facilities.

Assists in crafting the Plan of Care for each patient and family in coordination with the patient's physician and the hospice care team.

Initiates direct communication, when necessary, between the Hospice Medical Director and attending or consulting physicians to verify diagnosis and prognosis.

Confirms patient eligibility for hospice care through certification.
Conducts recertification in accordance with Medicare and Medicaid standards.
Provides medical leadership and expertise during interdisciplinary group meetings.
Actively participates in team meetings focused on quality improvement.
Attends Board meetings and engages in ethics and patient care committee discussions.
Contributes to the development of additional hospice programs.
Supervises other physicians and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs).

PATIENT CARE:


Assumes on-call responsibilities to provide telephone consultations to hospice nurses when the primary physician is unavailable.

Ensures coverage for all hospice and palliative care programs.
Develops a monthly medical director coverage schedule.

Acts as the attending physician upon request from the patient, family, or other involved providers.

Delivers direct medical care to patients in their homes as necessary.
Documents visits and communications in the patient's medical record.
Stays updated on hospice and palliative medicine techniques.
Participates in continuing medical education meetings related to symptom management and end-of-life care.
Assists in the development of Palliative Care Programs with partner nursing facilities.
Supports the establishment of inpatient units with collaborating hospitals.

COMMUNITY PHYSICIAN LIAISON:


Serves as the primary contact between hospice programs and community physicians, as well as other healthcare providers, to enhance and expand patient services.

Regularly engages with practicing physicians to promote the hospice program, encourage referrals, and address clinical inquiries regarding hospice and palliative care.

Facilitates the introduction of the hospice program to nursing homes, health maintenance organizations, hospitals, and other potential referral sources.

Conducts educational seminars and presentations for healthcare audiences as requested.

Submits articles for newsletters as directed.
Builds relationships with physicians in areas where services have expanded.
Utilizes conflict resolution strategies to address any issues with physicians.

Participates in ongoing education to enhance skills and knowledge.

Reports any compliance concerns promptly.
Safeguards patient privacy and confidentiality of health information.
Participates in training related to HIPAA Privacy Standards.
Completes additional duties as assigned by the Chief Executive Officer.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS:

Professional:
Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy degree from an accredited institution.
Current medical license in the state of Kentucky.
Knowledge of hospice and palliative care, particularly in managing symptoms associated with terminal illnesses.
Familiarity with medical records and terminology.
Ability to foster effective working relationships with colleagues and the public.
Demonstrates strong verbal and written communication skills.

Must be detail-oriented and adaptable to changing situations.

Desire to collaborate within a team and promote the mission of HPC-Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Kentucky.

Personal:


Familiarity with the local medical community and the ability to enhance the hospice's visibility and reputation.

Must adhere to the organization's Code of Ethics and Core Values.
Possesses qualities of empathy, responsibility, and dependability.
Must demonstrate assertiveness, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently.
Effective communication skills with team members, clients, and families are essential.
Must maintain appropriate vehicle insurance and be able to travel as needed.
Demonstrates leadership and teaching capabilities.
Eligibility to participate in Federal and State Health Care Programs.
Must pass background checks and health screenings as required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must utilize personal protective equipment and follow universal precautions.
May encounter stressful situations with patients and families.

Exposure to infectious materials may occur.
