Job Description Summary:

As a Phlebotomist II, you will be responsible for obtaining venous, arterial, and capillary blood samples from patients and transporting them to the laboratory. You will also perform venipunctures and other blood collection procedures. Additionally, you will be available to assist physicians in special procedures and prepare reference lab samples. This role requires continuous exposure to blood, patient specimens, and needles.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Obtain and/or verify receipt of all venous, arterial, or capillary blood specimens as requested; divide blood quantities for multiple tests; and transport the specimens back to the lab.
  • Respond to patient emergencies to collect specimens as requested.
  • Administer dextrose as required for tolerance tests.
  • Apply accurate identification and collection of specimens with respect to patient identity, appropriateness of specimen obtained with respect to analyses ordered, and correct deliveries for effective handling.
  • Order lab tests from manual request forms.
  • Relay results by pneumatic tube system, fax machine, or mail to the proper recipients.
  • Assist with new employee training, assessment of competency of Phlebotomist, and assist with in-service education.
Job Specifications:Education:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Licensure, Registration, Certification:
  • Certification as a phlebotomist by a national certification board required for LLT Program phlebotomists.
  • In other Laboratory departments, EMT IV certified phlebotomists may be acceptable.
Experience:
  • Six months phlebotomy in a clinical laboratory or 100 successful sticks.
