Position Overview

As a vital member of the therapeutic team at the Cancer Center, the Certified Radiation Therapy Specialist is responsible for administering prescribed radiation treatments to patients. This role includes meticulously documenting the daily radiation doses as directed by the radiation oncologist and ensuring precise simulation under their guidance.

The specialist is committed to addressing both the physical and emotional needs of patients undergoing treatment, upholding the ethical standards and scope of practice associated with the profession. Adherence to national, institutional, and departmental protocols regarding treatment delivery and patient care is essential.

Education
A graduate of an accredited program in Radiation Therapy Technology is required.

License

Current registration or eligibility for registration as a Radiation Therapist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) is mandatory. If registered, a current license as a Medical Radiation Technologist by the Mississippi State Department of Health is required.
Preferred: Registered as a Radiologic Technologist (RT(R)) by the ARRT.



Certification
Completion of BCLS certification by the end of orientation is required; maintenance of current BCLS certification is necessary.

Experience
Preferred experience includes familiarity with Varian Trilogy with Rapid Arc and Gating, high dose radiation (HDR), and G.E-CT Simulator.

Physical Demands

Work is moderately active:

Involves sitting with frequent movement throughout the facility and potential travel to other locations within the service area.

Tasks may require a negligible amount of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including patients.


Daily activities involve various physical motions; exposure to body fluids and tissues may present health risks.


Work involves repetitive motions:
Significant use of wrists, hands, and fingers while operating standard office equipment such as a computer keyboard.


Ability to perceive sound at normal speaking levels, with or without correction, is necessary; fine discrimination in sound is required.

Close visual acuity and the ability to adjust focus between different distances are essential.


Must maintain activity levels for extended periods without undue fatigue.

Flexibility in scheduling is required to accommodate the hospital's operational needs.


Mental Demands
Strong mental acuity and decision-making skills are necessary. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential for effective interaction with patients and colleagues.

Emotional stability to manage high-stress situations is crucial. The ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines is required.

Attention to detail and multitasking capabilities in complex environments are essential. Collaborative and respectful working relationships across the organization are expected.



Special Demands
Exceptional customer service skills and professional demeanor are required.

Proficiency in computer use, including keyboard skills and familiarity with office technology (e.g., telephone, fax), as well as MS Outlook and Word, is necessary.


Demonstrated clinical judgment and the ability to apply professional skills to a diverse patient population are essential.
