Job Summary:

The Police Officer will be responsible for providing protection of life and property, promoting and preserving peace, enforcing municipal, state, and federal laws, and delivering police-related services to all residents and visitors of Wauwatosa, WI.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Preserve the peace by responding to calls for assistance involving altercations between people, including domestic disturbances, fighting, and neighborhood disputes.
  • Protect life by responding to calls for service and emergency assistance, rendering aid to the physically injured, handicapped, and others requiring assistance.
  • Protect property by performing security checks of residences and businesses, observing potential hazards, and taking corrective action.
  • Investigate violations of state laws and local ordinances, and arrest violators using the degree of force necessary.
  • Prepare incident and accident reports, affidavits, citations, legal documents, memorandums, and other job-related forms and documents.
  • Participate in job-related training and courses to maintain skills, knowledge, and abilities necessary to perform duties and maintain law enforcement certification.
Requirements:
  • Be at least 21 years old and a United States Citizen.
  • Education: A minimum of 60 college credits from an accredited college or university at the time of hire.
  • Not have any felony or domestic violence convictions.
  • Valid driver's license at time of application and throughout employment.
  • Vision 20/40 corrected.
  • Ability to communicate in English, both orally and in writing, in a clear manner using appropriate grammar.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle under normal and adverse conditions while maintaining the ability to communicate and activate equipment in the vehicle.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Higher education graduation.
  • Current law enforcement certification.
  • Two or more years of previous sworn law enforcement experience.
  • Previous non-sworn law enforcement experience.
  • Military service.
Additional Information:

The department runs first, second, and third shifts to provide 24-hour coverage. During your first year of training, you will be required to switch shifts six or more times for training. After your first year, you will likely be assigned to 3rd shift. It will likely be a minimum of three years before you will have an opportunity to move to 2nd shift and ten or more years before you have an opportunity to move to 1st shift.
