DEPARTMENT NAME: Food & Nutrition Services

JOB SUMMARY: The Cashier in Nutrition Services is responsible for managing monetary transactions while providing food service to students and staff. This role involves operating the cash register and maintaining an organized serving area. The position requires working under general supervision and following established procedures.

PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Handles Payments: Accepts payments via cash, vouchers, or electronic methods, and issues receipts, refunds, or change as necessary.
  2. Food Preparation Assistance: Aids in the preparation and packaging of food items, ensuring proper temperature and portion sizes.
  3. Stock Management: Regularly stocks and rotates food items available for sale.
  4. Maintains Cleanliness: Ensures checkout areas are clean and orderly, performing general cleaning duties as required.
  5. Customer Service: Addresses customer inquiries and provides information regarding procedures and policies.
  6. Complaint Resolution: Assists customers in resolving complaints and processes returns and exchanges.
  7. Price Identification: Identifies prices of goods and calculates bills using cash registers or price scanners.
  8. Sales Balancing: Balances sales with received payments and completes necessary reports.

COMPLEXITY OF WORK: Performs semi-routine tasks with occasional problem-solving.

IMPACT OF DECISIONS: Decisions made have minor impact, affecting only the immediate work area.

EQUIPMENT USAGE: Operates cash registers and commercial kitchen equipment.

SAFETY OF OTHERS: Some responsibility for the safety and health of others.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: High school diploma, GED, or vocational training is required.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED: None required.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Three months of related experience, particularly in customer service, is preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Standing and walking: 5+ hours per day
- Lifting and carrying: frequently with loads of 20 to 50 pounds
- Dexterity: Ability to operate machines and tools.

UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS:
- Exposure to extreme temperatures, wet conditions, and occasional moving mechanical parts.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: Normal visual acuity, hearing, and speaking abilities are necessary for the role.
