Summary:
Evaluates, plans, implements, and assesses care for wound, ostomy, and continence patients across both inpatient and outpatient settings.
Primarily functions as a clinical consultant, providing direct patient care and education to complex cases while also delivering staff educational programs in specialized areas.
Responsibilities:
Administrative Duties:
Regularly updates and maintains the formulary for ostomy, wound, continence, and skin care products in collaboration with Central Distribution and PMC. Assesses product efficacy and cost-effectiveness while staying informed about innovations from manufacturers. Maintains a systematic approach for documenting patient caseloads and updates data collection criteria and tools as necessary. Adheres to current documentation standards for ostomy, wound, continence, and skin care patients.
Clinical Consultation:
Acts as a consultant to medical staff, including physicians and nursing personnel, for patients with wound, ostomy, and continence issues. Provides assessments and recommendations for care, develops patient care plans, and monitors their effectiveness. Educates patients and families while coordinating discharge plans with providers and case management.
Serves as a clinical consultant for wound, ostomy, continence, and skin care needs at various organizational levels.
Participates in professional development opportunities to enhance clinical skills and remain current with standards related to wound, ostomy, continence, and skin care.
Educational Responsibilities:
Delivers educational programs for healthcare providers, including nurses, physicians, and students within the UNC Health Care system.
Provides resources to keep staff informed about advancements, new policies, and procedures relevant to WOC practices and quality and patient safety issues.
Acts as a clinical expert for orientation materials on wound, ostomy, and skin conditions for new nursing staff and serves as a clinical preceptor for nursing and medical staff as well as WOC Nurse students.Research Participation:
Engages in research activities related to WOC nursing practices, including wound, ostomy, skin, and continence conditions. Participates in data collection efforts, including audits of pressure injuries, and interprets data as needed.
Additional Information
Education Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited institution.
- Wound Ostomy Continence Nursing (WOCN) certification (pending or current)
- Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification.
- Minimum of two (2) years of nursing experience.
- Advanced assessment and clinical intervention skills.
