Position Overview:

  • The Patient Care Assistant is essential in delivering compassionate support to individuals under the guidance of registered nurses and other healthcare professionals. This role encompasses aiding with daily living tasks, ensuring patient comfort, and upholding a safe and sanitary environment. The Patient Care Assistant must be observant, caring, and dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for those in their care.

Core Responsibilities:

Direct Patient Support:

  • Assist individuals with daily living activities, including bathing, dressing, grooming, feeding, and toileting.
  • Monitor and document vital signs such as blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and respiration.
  • Support patient mobility, including turning, repositioning, and transferring individuals to prevent bedsores and ensure comfort.

Assistance with Medical Procedures:

  • Support nurses and physicians during examinations and treatments.
  • Prepare and maintain medical equipment for procedures as instructed.
  • Collect specimens for testing, such as urine, fecal, or sputum samples.

Patient Environment Maintenance:

  • Ensure a clean, safe, and organized patient environment.
  • Change bed linens, clean patient rooms, and maintain proper sanitation.
  • Ensure that the patient's call light and personal items are easily accessible.

Effective Communication:

  • Promptly report any changes in the patient's condition to the nursing staff.
  • Provide emotional support and communicate effectively with patients and their families.
  • Accurately document patient care activities in a timely manner.

Collaboration with Healthcare Team:

  • Work collaboratively with nursing and medical staff to deliver high-quality patient care.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to the development of patient care plans.

Compliance and Safety Standards:

  • Adhere to all healthcare regulations, including infection control, safety protocols, and patient confidentiality.
  • Engage in ongoing education and training to maintain competency in patient care duties.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a state-approved Nursing Assistant certification program.
  • Current certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant in the state.
  • Basic Life Support certification preferred.
  • Previous experience in a healthcare environment is advantageous.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and manage stressful situations with patience and empathy.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift, move, or assist patients using proper body mechanics.
  • Standing and walking for extended periods.
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring physical strength, such as lifting or turning patients.

Work Setting:

  • Work in a clinical environment, such as a hospital, nursing home, or outpatient facility.
  • Exposure to bloodborne pathogens, infectious diseases, and other hazards.
