Internship Overview:
This internship opportunity is unpaid and is designed to commence in the late summer months. The IRC has been actively involved in Youth Programs for several years, providing essential support to refugee youth in their educational journeys. The focus is on newly arrived refugee and immigrant youth who may have faced trauma and are navigating the challenges of acculturation and language learning.

Internship Responsibilities:
Interns will be assigned to various roles based on their interests and skills, contributing to school-based programming. Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with academic tutoring and in-class support.
  • Engaging in student outreach and program development.
  • Supporting program implementation and administrative tasks.
  • Facilitating field trips and additional programming as needed.

All activities will be conducted through a lens of Social Emotional Learning, ensuring a trauma-informed and culturally responsive approach. Interns will work closely with students in small groups or one-on-one settings to foster academic growth and learning.

Learning Objectives:
Interns will have the opportunity to:

  1. Implement weekly after-school tutoring sessions to enhance academic performance.
  2. Coordinate engaging leadership activities for high school students, utilizing trauma-informed practices.
  3. Provide basic program management support, including outreach, data entry, and lesson planning.
  4. Offer tailored academic support for English Language Learners.

Qualifications:
Applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate program.
  • Reside in the local area and be comfortable with in-person work.
  • Possess reliable transportation.
  • Available for specific hours during the week.
  • Experience working with youth, particularly refugees or English Language Learners, is advantageous.
  • Ability to commit to a set number of hours each week.
  • Bilingual or multilingual candidates are strongly preferred.
