Job Title: Behavioral Support Specialist
Norwalk Public Schools is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Behavioral Support Specialist to join our team.
This is a full-time position working under the direct supervision of the special education teacher and clinical supervision of the Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).
The successful candidate will work with students individually or in small groups to implement individually designed interventions and behavior protocols to assist students in mastering their Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goals.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in implementing Norwalk Board of Education policies, rules, regulations, and directives.
- Foster a safe learning environment by adhering to Norwalk school policy.
- Collaborate with the Department of Specialized Learning to implement IEP goals.
- Apply ABA principles consistently when interacting with students.
- Support students with disabilities in participating in general education and/or special education classrooms.
- May provide interventions across settings, including school, community, home, and vocational-related job sites, as written in student's IEP.
- Collect and record data according to the schedule outlined in the student's Behavior Intervention Plan, IEP, or Independence Plan.
- Enter data into the electronic data collection system required by the Department of Specialized Learning.
- Assist in reviewing data for progress monitoring and reporting trends to the Department of Specialized Learning.
- Participate in review and sharing data reports and student progress monitoring data for instruction and behavior, using a format provided by the Department of Specialized Learning.
- Implement toilet schedules or feeding programs as written in the student's IEP.
- Support student interaction with peers during classroom instruction, recess, co-curricular activities, and non-instructional periods, as outlined in the student's IEP.
- Document the level of prompting to ensure students' access to curriculum and instruction.
- Implement strategies in consultation with the Department of Specialized Learning, including discrete trial training, behavioral contracts, plans for generalization, response cost procedures, select reinforcers, contingent or non-contingent breaks, token economies, and point systems.
- Record student progress using observational data collection and standardized assessments under the direction of the Department of Specialized Learning.
- May participate in related service sessions to generalize skills throughout the school day, as written in the student's IEP or at the direction of the special education supervisor.
- May implement the student's Behavior Intervention Plan, IEP, or Independence Plan across settings, including during recess, breaks, emergency drills, assemblies, on school buses, or public transportation for field trips, by facilitating and encouraging interaction with peers as written in the student's IEP.
- May participate in Planning and Placement Team meetings as requested by the team or parent.
- Support students in accessing curriculum through computers, iPads, or other media.
- Support students in developing independent living skills, including hygiene, transportation, self-management, food preparation, and feeding.
- Maintain confidentiality at all times and report concerns directly to the Department of Specialized Learning and/or Principal.
Requirements:
- Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Effective active listening skills and ability to follow directions accurately.
- Capacity to enter and record data with precision on the prescribed format.
- Ability to review data trends.
- Capacity to work collaboratively with others.
- Ability to implement behavior intervention plans, independence plans, and discrete trial training with fidelity.
- Organizational and problem-solving skills.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree (preferred), Associate's Degree (60 college credits), or High School Diploma (or equivalent) with Para-Pro completion.
- Two plus years of successful experience under documented BCBA clinical supervision and RBT certification from the Behavior Analyst Certification Board.
- Specific experience working with students with high management needs.
- Participation in required crisis prevention strategies and restraint procedures training arranged and provided by the School District.
- Willingness to participate in District-offered professional development, continuing education, and/or training.
- Background check and current fingerprinting.
Salary: $55,000 - $70,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience.
Benefits: Medical, dental, and vision coverage, along with generous paid time off and holidays.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 37.5 hours weekly.
