Job Description

The Healthcare Registrar is responsible for the business aspect of the patient's visit to the Emergency Department as well as the patient-focused care delivery within the department. Key activities include:

  • Greeting and directing patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Answering telephones promptly and courteously, directing calls to appropriate personnel, and taking messages.
  • Collecting and distributing patient referral information received from affiliated physicians.
  • Escorting visitors and patients to appropriate areas and providing information to assist patients and visitors.
  • Ensuring an environment that is sensitive to cultural diversity and promoting an inclusive atmosphere.
  • Distributing departmental reading material, such as the Emergency Department brochure, Health Care Proxy, and Patient Bill of Rights.
  • Registering patients by updating or entering patient demographic, financial information, and emergency contact data into the computer system.
  • Verifying demographic information and insurance coverage by interviewing patients, family members, or friends.
  • Generating patients' charts and attaching pertinent information, such as Emerg Card, Medicaid threshold, and EMS sheet.
  • Reviewing discharged patient charts for diagnosis, physician signature, dictation code, menu, and appropriate forms for completion.
  • Processing specimens for laboratory(ies) by ensuring that specimens are appropriately labeled, forms are completed, and identification processes have been followed.
  • Filing charts and retrieving old records.
  • Retrieving completed charts, addressograph plate, and all supporting documents from patient treatment areas.
  • Entering data into required computerized systems.
  • Maintaining patient recall files.
  • Ensuring that all papers, forms, etc. are stamped appropriately.
  • Logging patients on/in to the appropriate registration sheets/logs and reconciling log books.
  • Obtaining signatures for consent.
  • Making clinic appointments.
Qualifications

6-9 months of healthcare experience in order to become familiar with institutional policies and procedures is preferred.
