Job Overview

Position Summary:

The role involves designing and implementing food service or nutritional initiatives aimed at enhancing health and managing diseases, adhering to established medical nutrition care protocols. This position includes providing counseling to individuals or groups, conducting nutritional studies, and certifying program participants.

Essential Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Proficient understanding of food science, nutrition, and biological sciences. Familiarity with research techniques, needs assessments, outcome-based research, and quality improvement strategies. Awareness of how age, growth, and development impact nutritional needs. Strong interpersonal and motivational abilities. Competence in interpreting basic statistical data and calculating nutrient compositions of various foods.

Capability to formulate diets tailored to specific health conditions.

Key Responsibilities:

Evaluate nutritional requirements, dietary restrictions, and existing health plans to create and execute dietary care strategies and provide nutritional guidance.

Assess nutritional status, identify dietary issues, and develop a comprehensive care plan based on patient needs, considering factors such as age, cognitive and social development, cultural background, severity of health conditions, and signs of malnutrition.

Establish nutrition objectives and recommend comprehensive interventions to address or enhance nutritional challenges and achieve set goals, including but not limited to: fluid, electrolyte, and glucose management, pharmacotherapy management concerning drug-nutrient interactions, dietary supplements, enteral and parenteral nutrition, necessary equipment for nutrition delivery, transitional feeding strategies, and post-discharge dietary care plans.

Collaborate with healthcare professionals to ascertain the nutritional needs and dietary limitations of patients.

Educate patients and their families on nutritional principles, dietary adjustments, food selection, and preparation methods; coordinate individual follow-ups as necessary.

Provide counseling to individuals and groups on fundamental nutrition principles, healthy eating practices, and nutritional maintenance to enhance their quality of life.

Certify individuals for participation in relevant programs such as women, infants, and children (WIC) and applicable research initiatives.

Physical and Environmental Considerations:

This position requires regular exposure to biohazardous conditions, including potential radiation exposure, bloodborne pathogens, fumes, airborne particles, and/or toxic substances, necessitating adherence to safety protocols. Occasional extended working hours, travel to offsite locations, and significant variations in workload due to seasonal or clinical demands may occur. The role also involves physical activities such as occasional lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds, bending, stooping, driving, kneeling, pushing/pulling, reaching, as well as constant sitting, standing, walking, and twisting.

Education & Experience Requirements:

Candidates must meet the criteria for registration as a registered dietitian (RD) as established by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).

Licenses and Certifications:

Mississippi licensure must be obtained within the specified timeframe. Registration as a dietitian (RD) by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) is also required within the applicable timeframe.
