Job Summary

The Chief Nursing Officer of Holtz and Women's Hospital is accountable for ensuring optimal quality of patient care, the optimum utilization of human resources and strategic planning for patient care services and programs within Holtz and Women's hospital.

Key Responsibilities
  • Administratively directs and coordinates the nursing service functions of the hospital including management of nursing directors, assistant directors, managers, and supervisors.
  • Provides leadership framework for planning, directing, coordinating and improving patient care services throughout Holtz & Women's hospitals.
  • Ensure that provided services are responsive to the needs of the JHS and its patients.
  • Establish, promote, and evaluate standards of patient care and nursing practices.
  • Provides leadership support in the development and communication of the JHS Mission and Vision Statement and the Standards of Excellence.
  • Coordinates the development, implementation and evaluation of the policies and procedures necessary for effective quality patient care.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of long-range strategic and operational plans which support the JHS philosophy and mission statement.
  • Participates in the development and monitoring of the hospital-wide and departmental budgets.
  • Participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of the Performance Improvement Plan.
  • Assure compliance with the standards of Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals, the Department of Health Education and Welfare, and the State Department of Health Rehabilitative Services.
  • Ensures that all the care provided meets the patient's individual needs, i.e. physical, psycho-social, cultural, spiritual and age-specific.
  • Determines appropriate level of qualifications and competencies of the nursing personnel and others who provide patient care services.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate divisional goals and objectives.
  • Recruit, retain, evaluate and motivate the staff necessary to implement the goals, objectives and responsibilities of the assigned areas.
  • Provide for the educational development and training of staff, and of nursing and allied health students.
  • Provide support in the development of the new-hire orientation program addressing the philosophy, mission, values, plant technology and safety management programs of the Public Health Trust.
  • Promote a positive image to the public about the activities, accomplishments and expectations of the Jackson Health System.
  • Provide support for mechanisms for promoting education and advancement goals of staff members.
  • May Co-Chair the Clinical Nurse Practice Committee.
  • Establish and promote effective collegial relationships with the medical staff, ancillary services, and other nursing departments.
  • Participate in professional organizations and community activities.
  • Ensures development and implementation of organization-wide and unit specific, safety, security and infection control standards.
  • Ensures staff is clinically competent and trained on their role in patient safety, performance improvement and risk management.
  • Collaborates with related team members to monitor and evaluate a Culture of Safety through active coaching of direct reports to insure that the culture of safety is cultivated at the facility.
  • Monitors and evaluates results of annual Employee Satisfaction Survey and collaborates with related team members to develop and implement action plans.
  • Ensure that employees respect the rights, privacy and property of others at all times, including the confidentiality of information, according to Administrative Policies and all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Demonstrate leadership behaviors that empowers others, fosters open dialogue, effectively influences and negotiates, and builds and maintains effective relationships.
  • The leader understands and adheres to JHS compliance standards as they appear in the Code of Conduct, Compliance Policies, and all other JHS Policies and Procedures and supports the commitment of JHS in adhering to federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations governing ethical business practices for health care providers by demonstrating knowledge of procedures for protecting and maintaining security, confidentiality and integrity of employee, patient, family and organization information.
  • The leader further understands that JHS is committed to its role in preventing health care fraud and abuse and complying with applicable state and federal laws related to health care fraud and abuse.
  • This commitment is supported and enabled through an anonymous hotline which serves as one of several mechanisms for reporting suspected fraud, waste and/or abuse, as well as other compliance related issues.
  • The leader to report through any of the reporting mechanisms (e.g., anonymous hotline, supervisor, Compliance Officer) any suspected health care fraud, waste and/or abuse as well as other compliance-related issues.

  • Performs all other related job duties as assigned.
