Position:
This role involves working up to 20 hours weekly.

The initial compensation for this position starts at $16.75/hour, contingent upon qualifications and relevant experience exceeding the minimum criteria.


The Hydroponic Crop Production Associate collaborates within a dedicated team to support the cultivation of hydroponically grown crops for the culinary departments at Biltmore.

This position requires close collaboration with program leaders and Food & Beverage teams to assess needs, monitor yields, and manage production schedules and costs.

Additionally, the incumbent will offer general assistance and support to leadership, the department, and the organization as necessary.

Work hours may vary, typically falling between Monday and Friday, from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, with occasional weekends and holidays required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Planting and sowing of lettuces, herbs, flowers, and microgreens.
  • Monitoring crops for hydration needs, nutrient deficiencies, pests, diseases, and overall care.
  • Harvesting and packaging crops with attention to product quality.
  • Understanding and adhering to all Food Safety regulations and guidelines.
  • Delivering crops promptly and in optimal condition.
  • Providing courteous and professional assistance to team members, customers, and guests.
  • Collecting monthly water samples and preparing them for laboratory analysis.
  • Managing inventory of supplies, including seeds, plant materials, nutrients, and harvesting equipment.
  • Ensuring daily cleaning and sanitization of greenhouse, walk-in cooler, and production areas.
  • Assisting with Agritourism events as needed, including setup, breakdown, serving, and cleaning.
Qualifications:

  • High school diploma is required; additional education, training, or certifications are preferred. Must be able to obtain a NC pesticide applicator's license.
  • One (1) year of relevant experience is necessary; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Preferred candidates will have experience in vegetable/fruit production and hydroponic techniques.
  • Ability to identify signs of disease and stress in plants.
  • Capability to recognize functionality issues in various hydroponic systems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Access, Word, and Outlook.
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing exceptional internal and external guest service.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written; able to convey information clearly and concisely, representing Biltmore professionally.
  • Strong planning, time management, and organizational skills; able to prioritize tasks and adapt as needed.
  • Proactive, exercising sound judgment; capable of troubleshooting and problem-solving.
Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to walk or stand for extended periods.
  • Must be able to repetitively lift, push, or pull up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to kneel, stoop, bend, and reach overhead and below.
  • Work in greenhouse environments and outdoors in various weather conditions, with exposure to dust, dirt, pollen, chemicals, and particulates.
  • Manual dexterity to safely operate hand and powered gardening tools, farm tractors with loaders, and standard transmission vehicles.
  • Must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver's license.
