Position Overview

Emergency Room Registered Nurse - Day Shift - 72 hours per pay period. Every 4th Weekend - 12 hour shifts. Comprehensive benefits package includes: IPERS, Health Insurance, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, and Long Term Disability. Paid Time Off (PTO) and Sick Leave begin to accrue from the first day of employment. A minimum of two years of experience as a Registered Nurse is required, with a preference for candidates with Emergency Room experience.

Role Summary

The Emergency Room Registered Nurse is responsible for delivering both direct and indirect nursing care to patients. This role involves effective communication on behalf of patients and collaboration with other healthcare professionals to coordinate comprehensive patient care. The nurse will manage various aspects of nursing care for which they are accountable.

Reporting Structure

Reports to: Emergency Room Director

Supervises: LPNs, EMTs, ER Technicians, Paramedics

Key Responsibilities
  1. Conduct patient admission interviews within 30 minutes of triage, ensuring a thorough nursing assessment that includes medical history and the circumstances leading to the emergency visit.
  2. Effectively triage patients and categorize them based on urgency.
  3. Anticipate changes in patient conditions and perform necessary emergency interventions.
  4. Implement nursing care in accordance with established protocols and standards of care.
  5. Prepare patients for examinations by physicians and provide necessary assistance.
  6. Obtain required consents for emergency treatment and information release.
  7. Provide patient education related to their health conditions and care processes.
  8. Document patient conditions, nursing actions, and responses in the Electronic Medical Record.
  9. Oversee patient care provided by other team members in the Emergency Department, ensuring adherence to safety and quality standards.
  10. Evaluate current lab values and their implications for patient care.
  11. Administer prescribed medications and treatments, documenting patient responses accordingly.
  12. Accompany patients to other departments or units as necessary.
  13. Engage in non-direct patient care activities, including educational initiatives and quality improvement projects.
  14. Adhere to hospital and nursing service policies and procedures.
  15. Assist in the training and development of nursing and ER staff.
  16. Demonstrate flexibility in supporting staffing and scheduling needs.
  17. Perform additional duties as required by extenuating circumstances.
  18. Lead trauma alert efforts, coordinating the trauma team’s response to stabilize patients.
  19. Maintain proficiency in computerized documentation and medication administration systems.
Physical and Mental Requirements

Essential Physical and Mental Characteristics:

  • Ability to lift heavy objects (45 lbs. and over)
  • Capability to perform moderate lifting (15-44 lbs.)
  • Ability to carry light objects (under 15 lbs.)
  • Proficient in pushing and pulling tasks
  • Ability to stand, walk, and perform repetitive bending
  • Capability to reach above shoulder level and perform simple grasping
  • Ability to hear and communicate effectively
  • Capacity to work in a fast-paced environment with varying noise levels
Work Environment

The Emergency Room Registered Nurse operates in a well-lit, climate-controlled nursing unit. The role may involve exposure to hazardous materials and requires adherence to safety protocols.

Qualifications

Minimum Educational Requirements: Graduate of a state-approved nursing program. Must hold a valid Registered Nurse license in the state of Iowa. Completion of Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) within three months of hire, and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) within the first year of employment.
