Position Overview

The Department of Mining and Minerals Engineering at the Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking qualified candidates for a teaching faculty role at the rank of Instructor. This position is set to commence in the upcoming academic year. The initial contract will be for one year, with the potential for renewal based on performance and funding availability.

Key Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of this role will include:

  • Delivering and assessing MME courses for undergraduate students, spanning from freshman to senior levels.
  • Training and overseeing both Undergraduate and Graduate Teaching Assistants.
  • Developing and refining course materials to enhance educational delivery.
  • Participating in departmental service and contributing to internal and external evaluations.
  • Completing additional tasks as assigned, with a focus on instructional duties rather than research.

The ideal candidate will possess a passion for student engagement, exhibit strong classroom presence, and demonstrate effective managerial and organizational abilities. Application materials should clearly outline your motivation for pursuing an instructional role, along with a statement detailing your teaching methodologies.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must hold an M.S. in Mining Engineering or a closely related discipline by the time of application. Additionally, applicants should provide evidence of a genuine commitment to teaching, which should be articulated in the cover letter. Relevant experience in Mining Engineering or a related field beyond the undergraduate level is also required. A criminal conviction check will be mandatory.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with a PhD in Mining Engineering or a related field by the start date of the position. Prior experience in teaching or instructional roles at secondary or postsecondary levels is highly desirable, along with demonstrated leadership or management experience.
