The 7SW Surgical & General Trauma Unit is a 33-bed adult inpatient facility situated on the 7th floor, catering to a diverse patient demographic including but not limited to trauma cases, general surgical procedures, urology, orthopedics, gynecology, and internal medicine. This semi-private unit operates with a collaborative nursing model where Registered Nurses (RNs) partner with Patient Care Technicians (PCTs). A charge RN is designated for both shifts to oversee immediate unit requirements and serve as a key resource.

Core Responsibilities:
Acute nursing care encompasses various treatment and monitoring techniques such as:
  • Regular vital sign assessments
  • Centralized telemetry monitoring
  • Oxygen and glucose monitoring
  • Wound care management
Common patient diagnoses and surgical interventions include traumatic brain injuries, polytraumas, cholecystectomies, prostatectomies, joint replacements, urinary diversions, bowel resections, and ostomy procedures. Standard practices involve hourly patient rounding and bedside shift reporting to ensure safety and comfort. Daily interdisciplinary rounds are conducted to facilitate effective discharge planning.

Qualifications:

  • Diploma from an accredited nursing school (BSN or ADN preferred)
  • BLS certification from an accredited provider required prior to employment
  • Illinois nursing license required prior to employment
