POSITION OVERVIEW:


The Safety and Security Specialist is responsible for safeguarding individuals and property within the University of Maryland's facilities. This role involves regular patrols of buildings and grounds to deter incidents such as theft, vandalism, and other disruptive activities.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts thorough patrols of the University of Maryland properties and off-site locations to mitigate risks of fire, theft, and vandalism; inspects access points to assess security levels.
  • Operates security vehicles as required during the execution of duties.
  • Maintains constant radio communication, ensuring acknowledgment of transmissions and adherence to professional communication standards.
  • Ensures that only authorized personnel gain entry to University facilities.
  • Manages the locking and unlocking of facility doors in accordance with established protocols.
  • Utilizes software applications such as Word and Outlook, along with other necessary computer systems to fulfill job responsibilities.
  • Maintains accurate records in lost and found logs; informs individuals when their lost items are recovered.
  • Participates as a member of the Emergency Response Team; responds to urgent alerts.
  • Acts promptly in response to University safety codes and alerts.
  • Investigates reported incidents, documenting findings and actions taken in incident reports.
  • Responds immediately to calls for assistance in managing disorderly conduct or aggressive individuals.
  • Conducts intake responsibilities for patients identified as at risk for self-harm or harm to others, including observation during critical situations.
  • Inspects outgoing packages to prevent theft of University property.
  • Responsible for the secure storage of personal items belonging to patients, ensuring compliance with documentation standards.
  • Reports safety hazards, unusual occurrences, and accidents observed during patrols.
  • Keeps emergency access routes clear of obstructions.
  • Issues warnings for parking infractions on University grounds and reports violations to the Security Supervisor.
  • Escorts visitors, patients, and staff to and from parking areas as needed.
  • Assists individuals with lock-out situations or vehicle maintenance issues.
  • Inspects emergency equipment and communication devices, reporting any malfunctions.
  • Keeps detailed logs of activities performed during shifts.
  • Guides visitors and other members of the public as necessary when entering and exiting the facility.
  • Facilitates operations for emergency medical transport, assisting the crew as required.
  • Maintains a log for deceased individuals and ensures their respectful transport to the designated area.
  • Aims for excellence in service delivery across all aspects of security operations.
  • Demonstrates integrity in all actions, complying with relevant laws and regulations, as well as healthcare oversight requirements.
  • Maintains confidentiality and security of all sensitive information, using and disclosing only what is necessary for job functions.
