Job Overview

The Patient Care Technician plays a vital role in supporting patient care across various nursing departments. This position involves the safe transportation of patients using wheelchairs or stretchers, managing dispatch services, and ensuring accurate documentation of all services provided.

As an Observer, the technician is responsible for monitoring patients who require constant supervision to enhance their safety and well-being.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care: Demonstrates the necessary skills and judgment to deliver both direct and indirect care to patients under the supervision of licensed nursing staff. Observes, collects, and communicates patient data/status to the assigned Registered Nurse.

Responds effectively to fluctuations in patient acuity and urgent situations as directed by nursing personnel.

Professional Development: Maintains up-to-date knowledge and certifications, including BLS certification. Acts as a mentor for new staff members and shows the ability to accept and implement constructive feedback.

Builds professional relationships with colleagues across various disciplines to foster a supportive and positive work environment. Remains informed about updates in hospital policies and procedures.

Safety and Quality: Promotes a culture of safety through personal accountability and commitment to maintaining a secure environment. Verifies patient identity using two identifiers before any procedure.

Understands individual responsibilities during hospital codes and emergency situations. Adheres to CDC hand hygiene guidelines and practices universal precautions, utilizing personal protective equipment appropriately.

Maintains awareness of each patient's fall risk and implements necessary safety measures. Conducts patient safety rounds using SBAR principles and follows the chain of command to report any identified risks.

Technology: Utilizes departmental software applications and understands operational procedures during system downtimes.

Compliance: Operates within legal, regulatory, and ethical standards relevant to the role. Adheres to applicable policies and procedures while safeguarding patient privacy and security.

Reports potential compliance issues to appropriate management levels and meets mandatory education requirements related to compliance, privacy, and security.

Patient and Family-Centered Care: Respects the values, preferences, and expressed needs of patients and their families. Recognizes patients and families as integral members of the healthcare team.

Collaborates with patients and families in planning, implementing, and evaluating care, welcoming their presence and participation at all times.

Age and Cultural Sensitivity: Considers the unique needs of each individual and demonstrates cultural awareness. Interacts with sensitivity when delivering care to diverse populations and effectively utilizes resources such as interpreter services.

Qualifications

Minimum Education: High School Diploma or GED preferred.

Minimum Work Experience: Previous experience as a Nursing Assistant or in a similar role is preferred.

Required Skills: BLS - Basic Life Support certification, basic medical terminology, basic computer skills, and effective communication abilities.

Ability to interact efficiently with a diverse range of individuals.
