Job Summary:
The Patient Observer Clinical Associate (POCA) plays a vital role in promoting a safe and compassionate patient care environment under the direction of a Registered/Licensed Nurse (RN). This position is part of the interdisciplinary healthcare team, ensuring the well-being and safety of patients.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with meeting patient safety needs
- Perform role-appropriate tasks as delegated by the RN
- Contribute to the plan of care through ongoing communication with the RN
- Provide constant safety observation for patients at risk for injury or elopement
- Document aspects of care in the electronic health record (EHR)
- Respond promptly to bed, chair, and virtual monitor alarms
- Maintain a safe and clean patient care environment
- Adhere to Infection Prevention standards and practice guidelines
- Participate in quality and safety initiatives on the unit
Additional Duties:
- Assist with personal activities, such as feeding, positioning, and mobilization
- Set up food trays and assist patients with meals
- Provide assistance with patient transport
- Obtain vital signs and report to the nursing team
- Ensure safekeeping of patient valuables
Requirements:
- Previous customer service or patient care experience preferred
- Knowledge of English language sufficient to read, speak, and write accurately
- Ability to lift and transport patients, and push and pull equipment, using the appropriate physical technique in a safe manner for the patient and self
- Ability to master basic computer skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients, visitors, and hospital personnel
Training and Certification:
- Training in Workplace Violence Prevention (i.e., AVADE)
- BLS certification
Working Conditions:
The Patient Observer Clinical Associate works in a fast-paced healthcare environment, interacting with patients, visitors, and hospital personnel. The ability to work effectively in a team and maintain a safe and clean patient care environment is essential.
