Chief Purpose of this position: The Department of African American Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University invites applications for a full-time, term (non-tenure-track) role at the rank of Assistant Professor.
CSIJ 200 is the inaugural course included in VCU's new racial literacy requirement, which is set to be integrated into VCU's Foundations of Learning. All incoming undergraduate students will be required to complete a 3-credit course in racial literacy as part of their General Education curriculum. CSIJ 200 will be offered as a hybrid course, incorporating both online and in-person instruction.
Virginia Commonwealth University is a prominent urban university located in a vibrant city. The Department of African American Studies boasts a rich and notable history as the second department of its kind established in Virginia. The Department offers an undergraduate degree in African American Studies, grounded in the pragmatism strand of the Black Studies intellectual tradition, and aims to prepare scholar-activists to address real-world issues.
Position Responsibilities: We are seeking a candidate who will (i) act as course coordinator for the department's new multi-section course, CSIJ 200: Race and Racism in the United States; (ii) manage a 4-4 course load, with potential course reductions for course coordination duties; (iii) design, develop, and teach new courses as necessary; (iv) contribute service as a faculty member in the Department of African American Studies; (v) enhance the intellectual and pedagogical environment of the department. This is a one-year, renewable position.
Required Qualifications: Required qualifications include: a MA with a focus on race and racism (e.g., African American Studies, History, Sociology, Ethnic Studies, Education, Gender and Women's Studies, English); experience in a program coordinator role or in a closely related administrative/managerial/supervisory capacity; a proven track record of teaching and engaging with diverse student populations, including underrepresented, minoritized, and other underserved groups.
