Essential Qualifications

Educational Background:

High school diploma or GED is mandatory; and Completion of a Medical Assistant training program or Eligibility for certification from either the American Medical Technologists (AMT) or The American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or National Health Career Association (NHA) or National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP) is required within 12 months of employment.

Certifications:

Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) or Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) is required within 12 months of employment; and Current American Heart Association BLS/CPR certification must be obtained within 30 days of employment. Must maintain necessary credentials.

Experience / Skills / Knowledge:

A minimum of six (6) months of experience as a medical assistant is required; or Completion of a medical assistant externship is necessary. Ability to communicate effectively and establish positive relationships with staff, physicians, patients, families, and the community. Familiarity with ICD9/10 and CPT coding as well as insurance procedures is essential. Primarily works a set schedule, but flexibility to work evenings or weekends based on patient care needs is expected; willingness to assist in other clinic locations as needed is required.

Key Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Practice Manager and direct supervision of the physician, the incumbent will perform the following duties: Provide quality care to patients at a proficient level; trained to competently assist in a Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) environment. Review patient charts prior to appointments to ensure all necessary lab work and diagnostic tests are completed and accessible to the provider. Measure and document patient vital signs, including temperature, pulse, height, weight, and blood pressure, as well as the reason for the visit, utilizing the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system appropriately. Assist with patient access tasks, including taking messages and helping providers with return calls to patients and pharmacies. Guide patients to examination rooms and prepare them for their appointments, notifying the provider of the patient's arrival. Support providers during patient examinations and procedures, including surgical interventions, GYN exams, diagnostic studies, and treatments. Operate and monitor medical equipment, assisting the provider as needed. Conduct hearing, vision, respiratory, and EKG tests, documenting results in the patient's chart. Administer medications as directed, adhering to the seven rights of medication administration. Perform venipuncture, collect urine samples, and execute lab test procedures in accordance with established protocols, following Universal Precautions. Identify emergency situations, seek assistance, and respond appropriately. Monitor patients during and after procedures, observing for reactions and complications; respond to emergencies and notify the appropriate personnel. Ensure safe care for patients, staff, and visitors; comply with all organizational policies, procedures, and standards while managing time, supplies, productivity, and service quality. Promote professional growth by fulfilling requirements for continuing education and skills competency; support departmental goals that contribute to the organization's success; serve as a mentor and resource for less experienced staff. Demonstrate a commitment to providing compassionate care to all community members by creating personalized experiences. Uphold the organization's service standards by delivering safe, caring, personalized, and efficient experiences to patients and colleagues. Perform other related duties as assigned.
