Description

Under supervision, oversees the operations of solid waste management or landfill services; provides essential and intricate support to the division manager. Directly supervises assigned field personnel.

This role will primarily focus on landfill operations.
Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Establishes and upholds operational protocols for the designated area of solid waste;
  • Contributes to the formulation and execution of objectives, policies, and priorities;
  • Offers suggestions to enhance division performance;
  • Aids in crafting operational strategies and safety enhancement procedures;
  • Recruits, trains, and inspires assigned personnel;
  • Delegates, schedules, monitors, and assesses the work of assigned staff; collaborates with employees to rectify deficiencies;
  • Adds to the resolution of complaints and customer inquiries;
  • Generates reports;
  • Guides and ensures adherence to safe working practices, techniques, and protocols;
  • Ensures timely investigation of all accidents and incidents, recommending suitable corrective actions;
  • Implements and documents preventative maintenance initiatives;
  • Drafts specifications for the procurement of solid waste equipment and materials;
  • Assists in the development and management of the division budget;
  • Ensures compliance with all Federal, State, County, and local regulations in a timely manner; and
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Experience:
  • Five years of experience in solid waste management and/or landfill operations.
  • Some experience in leadership or coordination roles.
Education
  • High school diploma or GED supplemented by some college-level coursework at an accredited institution. In lieu of college coursework, successful completion of a supervisory training program as determined by the City within six months of employment will be accepted.
Licenses and Certifications:
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid appropriate California Commercial driver's license;
  • Possession and maintenance of a HAZWOPER certification within 6 months of appointment.
Special Requirements:

Essential functions and duties require the following physical abilities and work environment:
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, climb, and lift 65 lbs.;
  • Exposure to heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards;
  • Ability to travel to different sites and locations.
