Job Summary

As a Medical Laboratory Technician at St James Parish Hospital, you will play a vital role in ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of laboratory testing. Your primary responsibility will be to perform a variety of laboratory tests, including chemical, hematology, urinalysis, serology, microbiology, and blood bank analysis.

Key Responsibilities
  • Order lab tests accurately in the laboratory information system (LIS) computer system.
  • Receive lab samples in the LIS computer system for processing.
  • Process and analyze lab samples appropriately for each laboratory department.
  • Ensure quality lab testing and instrument performance.
  • Adhere to regulatory compliance guidelines.
  • Maintain competency requirements.
  • Collect drug screens using the correct form and generate the correct charge.
  • Label and handle lab specimens properly.
  • Perform venipuncture to obtain blood samples using the appropriate type of equipment, taking into account the patient's age. Use two identifiers to identify the patient when collecting samples.
  • Ensure supplies are well stocked in all areas. Monitor inventory and order supplies from the material management department.
  • Answer the phone using proper phone courtesy.
  • Maintain an organized and clean working area. Research and resolve problems with lab samples and test reports by looking up patient results in the LIS computer system and faxing them to the proper personnel.
  • Support departmental goals and objectives.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements
  • Associate Degree from an accredited school in Medical Technology.
  • Eligible for employment upon graduation.
  • Certified as a Medical Laboratory Technician.
  • Current Louisiana State License as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist-Technician.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Mental and visual acuity are essential for this job. The ability to discern and differentiate colors, as demonstrated by a successful colorblindness assessment, is required.

Work Schedule
Varying 12-hour shifts.
