About the Role

BronxWorks is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Assistant Teacher to join our team in a Head Start program. As a key member of our early childhood education team, you will play a vital role in supporting the growth and development of young children.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the Lead Teacher in maintaining accurate records of each child's progress and development, ensuring compliance with Head Start standards.
  • Collaborate with the Lead Teacher to implement performance standards, policies, and procedures in the daily operation of the early childhood development center.
  • Contribute to the planning and implementation of the daily program of activities, based on principles of child development and the program's curriculum.
  • Review the progress of each child and develop written plans to promote their growth and development, based on assessments of skills, interests, and needs.
  • Maintain a well-organized, safe, and attractive classroom environment that fosters the growth and development of children.
  • Develop positive relationships with each child, promoting self-esteem and self-discipline.
  • Assist the teacher in implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and including children with disabilities and special needs.
  • Support the teacher in planning and implementing educational field trips.
  • Conduct home visits and staff/parent conferences as needed.
  • Participate in staff meetings, center activities, and staff development opportunities.
  • Assist the Education Director and teacher in implementing parent involvement activities.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the manager.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent credentials.
  • Completion of some college credits in Early Childhood Education is preferred.
  • CDA or 15 credits hours in Early Childhood Education is required.
  • Teacher Assistant Certification is preferred.
  • One year of prior teaching experience in Head Start and/or UPK programs is required.
  • Bilingual English and Spanish language skills are preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication, time management, and organizational skills are necessary.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and other standard business technology is required.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to use a computer for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, or sit for long periods of time.
  • Ability to climb five flights of stairs, if required to conduct home visits and/or fieldwork.
  • Ability to bend and retrieve objects and/or documents.
  • Ability to travel in the boroughs of New York City and its adjacent counties via public transportation.
  • Ability to travel for a minimum of 1 mile within a reasonable amount of time and in all types of weather, including inclement weather, if required to conduct home visits and/or fieldwork.
