The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for administering respiratory therapy procedures to examine, diagnose, and treat patients with respiratory and pulmonary disorders.
The ideal candidate will assess patient condition, consult with physicians to determine appropriate treatment plans, and monitor patient progress following procedures to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment.
The Respiratory Therapist will also document all patient care activities and ensure compliance with quality of care standards and regulations of the department.
Responsibilities:
- Administer physician-prescribed respiratory therapy, including oxygen, respiratory medication, PFTs, ABGs, and mechanical ventilation.
- Perform evaluation procedures, both invasive and non-invasive, to determine respiratory care needs, and make recommendations based on department protocols.
- Monitor patients requiring mechanical ventilation, including clinical assessment, routine rounds, troubleshooting, weaning, airway care, and diagnostic testing.
- Collect and analyze sputum, blood, and breath specimens for diagnosis, and measure lung capacity to determine impairments.
- Offer diagnostic results and treatment suggestions based on analysis, and communicate with healthcare team members to ensure continuity of care.
- Assure smooth operation of the PFT and ABG laboratory, or perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or manager.
Requirements:
- Professional competency in the science of Respiratory Care, commensurate with the NBRC credential.
- Graduate of a AMA-approved School of Respiratory Care.
- Licensed by the State Board of Medicine or State Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
- Certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support/BLS.
- Associate's/2-year degree required.
- Registered by the National Board of Respiratory Care (if Certified or not registered by the NBRC, must obtain NBRC registration within 2 years of hire).
Preferred Qualifications:
- ACLS and/or NALS preferred.
- Prior experience preferred.
