Position Overview: The Head Custodian is responsible for ensuring a pristine and secure environment for students, staff, and the community at the designated facility. This role includes overseeing and guiding other custodial staff and conducting regular inspections to maintain high standards of cleanliness and safety.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform cleaning tasks in all designated areas as instructed by the immediate supervisor, adhering to established protocols.
  • Ensure that custodial duties are executed efficiently and safely, enhancing the overall safety and cleanliness of the premises.
  • Follow local regulations and APS guidelines for the proper storage and disposal of cleaning supplies, chemicals, and waste; handle chemicals in accordance with safety instructions and APS policies.
  • Maintain floors, walkways, and outdoor areas by sweeping, mopping, de-icing, and shoveling snow as necessary.
  • Vacuum carpeted spaces and conduct spot cleaning as required or upon request.
  • Carry out additional custodial and minor maintenance tasks in various areas as needed.
  • Report emergencies, vandalism, and other urgent issues to the immediate supervisor promptly.
  • Manage access to facilities by opening and closing gates and buildings, and inspecting doors, windows, and property.
  • Safeguard assigned keys and ensure compliance with APS policies regarding the security of school buildings and grounds.
  • Assist in moving furniture, supplies, and equipment as necessary.
  • Properly maintain, transport, and store custodial equipment and supplies according to APS guidelines.
  • Set up and dismantle tables, chairs, and bleachers as directed by the immediate supervisor.
  • Report any accidents, hazardous conditions, or equipment malfunctions to the appropriate personnel immediately.
  • Perform outdoor maintenance tasks such as watering plants, mowing lawns, trimming shrubs, and managing weeds.
  • Provide support for emergency work or overtime as required.
  • Regulate heating and air conditioning systems to ensure optimal temperatures and efficiency.
  • Regularly check that all exits and panic bars are functioning correctly.
  • Conduct inventory checks and submit requests for supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Coordinate with the supervisor regarding work orders, assignments, and performance evaluations.
  • Review work orders to prioritize tasks and assist in creating work schedules.
  • Direct and assign custodial staff while inspecting facilities to ensure tasks are completed effectively and safely, in line with APS standards.
  • Inspect custodial tools and equipment to ensure proper operation and maintenance.
  • May be required to de-ice walkways and perform snow removal as necessary.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to adapt, organize, and solve problems effectively.
  • Interpersonal skills to engage with diverse populations both in-person and over the phone.
  • Capability to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in using measuring devices accurately.
  • Aptitude for identifying emergency situations and reporting them appropriately.
  • Basic reading and mathematics skills.
Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Completion of Head Custodian Workshop.
  • Three years of experience in custodial operations.
  • Valid New Mexico driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Completion of the custodial training program; all custodians must also complete mandatory APS asbestos awareness training.
