Medication Technician Job Description

Job Summary:

Elderwood is seeking a skilled Medication Technician to join our team. As a Medication Technician, you will play a vital role in ensuring the health and well-being of our residents by providing personal care and assisting with medication administration.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Directs and assists with the safe and proper administration of medication to assigned residents.
  • Administers medications and treatments as ordered by physicians and utilizes the five rights of medication administration.
  • Responsible for the storage and distribution of controlled substance medications, ensuring proper placement, labeling, and use.
  • Responds promptly to residents' requests and performs timely and accurate documentation.
  • Reports unusual symptoms, changes in condition, daily needs, and progress to the Director of Nursing and/or licensed professionals.
  • Contacts MD/NP/PA for orders or updates regarding changes in condition and updates resident representatives/emergency contacts.
  • Transfers residents out when indicated for evaluation and participates in Change-of-Shift Report.
  • Performs all position duties according to safety rules and standards of practice, ensuring the general safety of staff, residents, and visitors.
  • Implements emergency procedures correctly and efficiently.
  • Assists residents with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, eating, exercise, housekeeping, meal preparation, and personal care.
  • Notifies supervisors of changes in resident condition or needs and receives reports about resident status prior to providing care.
  • Maintains facility standards for resident care by protecting residents' rights, ensuring respectful treatment, and reporting unsafe conditions or equipment needs.
  • Completes in-service programs annually to reinforce knowledge of resident needs and care.
  • Observes and practices confidentiality of resident information and privacy when performing job duties.
  • Assists with service in the dining room for all meals as needed and maintains facility standards for service and customer service focus techniques.
  • Attends facility meetings, staff meetings, and required or preferred in-services and applies Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required.
  • Displays genuine concern for the elderly population, is dependable, patient, and has a compassionate attitude and respectful demeanor.

Requirements:

  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • Proof of successful completion of a medication technician training program within the last 12 months (preferred)
  • Must pass Elderwood Medication Technician test
  • Certification by an approved basic training program in home health aide services and possess written evidence of such certification (preferred)
  • High school diploma or equivalent (preferred)
  • Long-term care experience (preferred)
  • CNA or LNA certification (required for Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) positions)

  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • Able to assist with and operate a wheelchair
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Exceptional customer service skills
  • Displays empathy and willingness to work as a team

Work Environment:

This position requires regular interaction with residents, coworkers, visitors, and/or supervisors. To ensure a safe work environment, the employee must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language at an intermediate or more advanced level.
