Key Responsibilities:
The Senior Surety Underwriting Specialist is responsible for generating underwriting profits and safeguarding against losses through effective risk assessment and underwriting of various contract surety bonds, adhering to established authority limits.

  • Enhance company profitability and reduce losses by judiciously accepting or declining bond applications, particularly contract bonds, while efficiently managing a substantial volume of submissions.
  • Serve as a key liaison among agents, contractors, and branch personnel to uphold strong public relations and resolve underwriting or procedural inquiries.
  • Maintain positive agency relationships, even in cases of business rejection, through tactful communication.
  • Engage in regular travel within the assigned territory using personal, rental, or company vehicles, as well as public transportation and/or air travel.
  • Travel activities include agency visits to sustain existing business and pursue new opportunities, participation in industry events, and meetings with potential business partners.
  • Support the development and training of Assistant Underwriters to foster productive relationships with agency personnel and ensure efficient bond processing.
  • Conduct field audits on contractors to review records and gather pertinent information for accurate underwriting decisions.
  • Stay informed about market fluctuations, economic conditions, legal changes, agency personnel updates, and competitors' underwriting and rating strategies to maintain a competitive edge.
  • Implement underwriting modifications as directed by management or Home Office Underwriters to ensure the profitability of various business classes.
  • Utilize Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software to enter and maintain agency data, contributing to the marketing growth objectives of the branch and/or home office.
  • Leverage data analytics to drive business growth.

Qualifications:
This role requires a High School diploma or equivalent, along with a minimum of three years of bond underwriting experience, or a comparable combination of education and experience.

Success in the Senior Surety Underwriting Specialist position necessitates the ability to work independently and efficiently in a fast-paced environment. Proficiency in Microsoft (MS) Windows and Office applications is essential.

Additional skills required include:

  • Exceptional oral and written communication abilities.
  • Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Capability to maintain accurate records and handle confidential information discreetly.
  • Expertise in financial analysis and the ability to interpret large datasets for relevant insights.
  • A satisfactory motor vehicle operator's record as defined by company policies.

Physical and Environmental Demands:
This position involves extended periods of sitting, with occasional standing and walking. The role may require the ability to push, pull, carry, or lift up to 10 pounds. Ergonomic equipment is available to support employee comfort.
